Well, I’ll admit this one had me completely stumped - apologies to NeilS for passing the baton so early on - but I’m glad it’s all sorted now and it all now makes some sort of sense.

I can only imagine that in this case that the output from the passive switching box was connected to the HDD (tape) output stage. Feeding a signal in to the tape output can produce some really bizarre results. Esp. on the Nait5/112, with its logic switching.
