Has anyone decanted their CDs from their jewel cases into the folders you can buy?
If so, do you keep the CD and booklet in a sleeve together, or in individual sleeves?

There was a thread on this before;
You read my mind, good post
Also, i do not condone piracy of any sort, but anyone know if its ok to rip material and sell on the disk? We have 2000 CDs on a NAS
Martin
Thank you.
I use these. Perfect width for the job. Everything fits inside. I also bought the felt inserts for another layer of protection for the CD.
They are actually quite nice to handle too.
Reduced a lot of space and weight
It’s not legal to copy a CD and then sell on the origial CD.
It is legal however to resell a CD that you have not taken a copy from, this is covered in a section known as “first sale doctrine” in copyright law.
I’ve sold or given away some CD’s I’ve ripped …
My take on it is, no one is going to be the slightest bit concerned, it’s just impossible to enforce
I have around 3K+ CD’s. I also have 10 of the GNEDBY shelving units from IKEA. Each shelving unit holds around 180 CD’s in jewel cases, which meant they held only around 1800 CD’s, the rest being piled on top or in various heaps around the place!
Inspired by someone’s post on here i slowly decanted the CD’s from their jewel cases into plastic sleeves complete with the front/rear covers and any booklet.
The sleeves are bought from amazon, just search for “3L Office CD case” on amazon. The same company does a variety of CD, DVD and bluray storage solutions. Some types with holes to fit into ring binders if that is your preference.
Sadly there does seem to be no way of sensibly recycling the jewel cases. This did mean that the speed of my de-casing was limited to only filling about a quarter of my wheely bin each week with empty jewel cases.
To then store the CD’s in the new sleeves i 3d printed some small crates that would fit into the GNEDBY shelf units. Here’s one:
Note that many newer CD’s are shipped in cardboard sleeves so they just go directly into the crates.
I did have to print about 60 crates in total! The CD’s are all ripped onto a Naim Core, so i don’t often need them, but thought i should keep them for the sake of owning a physical copy of the media. Before I did this, at one time I was storing them in my loft in lots of the “useful crate company” crates, but i actually got concerned with how much weight i was adding to the loft floor (which being a modern house, is not particularly strong).
The cd’s now take about 1/3 the physical space they did before so they all easily fit into my existing shelf units, filling around 7 and a half of my 10 shelf units, so plenty of room for expansion!
I have now started doing the same with my DVD and Bluray collection using the sleeves from 3L office sized for those, with more 3d printed crates.
It’s not legal to copy a CD full stop.
This had been covered before here.

Hi Martin
Illegal in uk to keep a copy but dispose of original.
Don’t know how serious it could be but mostly down to conscience in practice.
I wouldn’t do it.
Best to have a hard copy original just in case of file loss.
Hope this helps.
I bought the 3L Office case, from having cd’s in different locations now have almost all the collection in one place with just the bigger box sets etc separate. Did initially buy some double cd 3L cases but they are more costly and found could use single cases by cutting paper inserts to correct size to separate the discs.
The issue is getting rid of the jewel cases.

No, illegal to make a copy, end of issue. Keeping the CD won’t excuse you.
Enforcebility factor zero, I agree.
About the introduction of the copyright law 2014 act.
Over ruled later… here.
Apologies. Depending on the way you phrase it Google AI says it’s legal if you copy it and illegal if you rip it. Should know better as AI google previously told me Eastenders was finishing on its 40th anniversary.
One review talks about a chemical reaction between the sleeve and the CD after a couple of years resulting in a residue and disc damage. How long have you been using them?
I recommended this product recently on a thread about the Core.
Remember in some “ cases “ see what I did.
Collectible and rare CDs only keep value if retained in the original packaging.
I’m not about to throw my rare jewel cases anywhere.
Thanks Mike
