I’ve got a CD5 which occasionally gives me an ERR on certain CDs. I’ve been offered a brand new laser unit for a CD5si - are these compatible?
No, they use totally different makes and types of mechanism. The CD5 used the Philips VAM1205.
I Note from your profile you list you have the CD3.5 - is this out of date? Note that the CD3.5 and the CD5 both used the VAM1205.
If you are only occasionally getting Errors then try either reviving the clamp (check the rubber loops - try rotating if they are squashed) or just try a new replacement Clamp 3. It could just be that the disc is no longer being held in position so well.

Thank you, Richard. Yes, the 3.5 was sent to an unscrupulous repair man pre-Covid and when I visited the shop…. It was a charity shop! I found that the ERR stopped after repeated use. I wonder if it just needs a bit of lube on the rails.
