I’ve acquired a late model CD5 XS in very good condition.
It plays discs fine and sounds great but has a quirk that I’d like the forum’s advice on.
When first inserting a disc and reading the TOC it makes two clunking noises which I assume to be the laser hitting it’s two end points.
It also does it if you press stop when playing and sometimes when shifting track, generally just from 1 to 2.
My suspicion is that the limit switch isn’t working properly?
Is this clunk normal or should it be silent?
The seller has offered to have it back if I don’t want it within a short trial period so I’d like to know if it’s nothing to worry about or it might be in it’s death throes.
No clunks from mine. I have just listened hard to be sure. All I get is what I think is called servo noise, a kind of whirring. The two bars in the display flash a few times, then the number of tracks comes up. I hit play, everything normal, it plays.
I have asked the question through the support page on the Naim website, but time is of the essence if I’m to find out I’d be wise not to keep it. The more I listen to it, the more I want to!
The seller didn’t say it has had a new mech and also told me it had minimal use, which given the condition it is in I would agree with. Do the ribbons come loose if it gets a jolt eg in transport?
If I carry on using it in this condition will the ribbon eventually break?
I know you don’t repair them any more and I’d rather not ship it anyway.
I’ll ask Darran at Class A if he wouldn’t mind having a look.
Class A don’t service CD players. I guess you could ask whether they would have a look and see if there’s a simple fix to a ribbon cable - but the official answer is no.
I wouldn’t think so, it can cause a skip/mistrack at the point where the tension on the ribbon releases though.
If you index a disc & listen to the sled’s travel, open the drawer when the sled is at its outermost position. Remove the disc & have a look with a torch through the sled slot. Ensure the ribbon is sat completely flat on the bottom of the tray & not snagged on the embossed part.
Thanks a lot both.
Best pics I could take suggest that there probably isn’t a problem with the ribbon cable.
The noise is very consistent and coincides with the extremes of travel in both directions.
Which makes me think it could be the end stop switch? @NeilS did I read you give advice to someone else that if the sled is overshooting and hitting the end then that isn’t a big issue?
That’s fantastic Neil, thanks a million.
I’d really like to keep it if this can be resolved.
Equally if this is a terminal fault (new mech) then at least I tried and found out in time to get my money back.
Cheers again, DW.
