CD5X no sound

No I actually took the cc5x out of the hifi unit and plugged into the AV Surround for the tv to try and eliminate everything and use a completely different set up but it would not work through that either.

Yes I did try that, I disconnected the tt by pulling the rca’s out of that and plugging them into the cd but that didn’t work either. Do you know how Naim charge for looking at these, ball park?

I would email Naim. Address on their site I’m pretty sure.

I rang Naim earlier and they have basically condemned it, he recommended the Uniti Star but I have no intention of buying a streamer. He also said that the CD5si is a step down from the CD5x so I doubt if I will get that so the search is on now for a replacement, ideally I would like an upgrade rather than like for like, i certainly don’t want a downgrade. Thanks for everyone’s help, I do appreciate it.

At the risk of playing one ‘parent’ off against a another, I reckon it’s worth inviting @NeilS to give an opinion on your CD player via the contents of this thread at least.

Wouldn’t know how to do that, social media is not really my thing, do more reading it than anything else.

I’m the same. But by putting the @ before his name (above) I have done it. Neil works at the factory (I think) and knows his way around the kit.

I think the advice from @Christopher_M is right here. Although some parts for CD players are no longer available it certainly isn’t all. Considering you say CDs still spin @Drifter2406, and as long as the mechanism still at least sounds “normal”, I’m not sure how support can write off your player so assuredly. But they categorically know more than I! CD mechanisms and DAC chips are the items in short/no supply IIRC. I don’t know if both channels going out, as in your case, helps rule any particular part being faulty in or out.

If you have a dealer nearby it might be worth asking if Naim can physically investigate the possibility of repair. Plus await a response from NeilS, who’s been really great responding to threads like these.

Fingers crossed anyway!

@Drifter2406 I was in the same position with a deceased CDX2 and bought a Marantz SA12 on offer for ÂŁ1600 - great buy amigo.

Common causes of no sound with these are:
Link plug “hot plugged” which can cause one of the power rails to be shorted to the ring of the DIN socket.
Failed HDCD encoder IC, which often takes both DACs with it.
Whilst we can in theory fix all of the above, the gamble would be the transport mechanism surviving the round trip.
If that is a risk you are willing to take, you would need to convince your dealer & plead with Naim tech support to issue an RMA.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Regards
Neil.

Thanks for the reply, like you said it is a big chance. Think I will be looking at the Marantz as a replacement. Thanks for everyone’s input in this, I do appreciate it.
