That would be nice.
However any minute on the internet there’s someone saying X is better than Y and vise-versa.
Anyway, some cheap cartridges can be good.
Hana EH is a very capable cartridge. It was fine with Rega P25 and Naim active system. I upgraded to MH and am happy. More open and musical now on Rega P8. Hana usually offers a trade-in program near year end.
That would make logical sense for a mk2 ML as the SL mk2 spec looks very ML like. I have not heard one yet but I a told the new one is very good indeed. Assuming that is correct it may effect sales of the ML without a new version too.
I won’t be ready to buy one in the early part of the new year in any case, more likely after Spring at the earliest.
If you up your spending to the level of the Gold Note Donatello red? I just wanted to share my experience. It’s been serving me well for a few years and has always sounded so good my deck has rivaled the NDS/555. My player is the Gold Note Mediterraneo and RIAA Gold Note PH-10.
I’m now testing the Da Vinci. It’s a lot better😁
That doesn’t sound fair, I’m just pointing out that both have their strengths and weaknesses. While MC strengths are more numerous, the qualities MMs do have are the ones I appreciate the most, strictly as a matter of personal preference. I appreciate you sharing your differing view and wouldn’t call you a fanatic for it.
I’m satisfied with my Nagaoka MP100 which retails around £100. I’m sure if I had an LP12 I might think differently but nevertheless it’s great bang for buck
It is I think pointless buying and using expensive cartridges on turntable and arm combinations that cost less than the cartridge. Putting a Koetsu (anything) on a Rega 1 to give an extreme would be foolish. The cartridge will make a sound but it won’t be a few grands worth nor be satisfying bang for your buck.
The Rega 1 and so on are good turntables but they are better off with more suitable cartridges many of which will be MM most likely. I quite like the Nagoaka range the ones I have heard sound pretty good to me.
Okay, fair enough, you’re not a fanatic just a person who appreciates MM cartridges very very much then…![]()
Michael Fremer heard recently the Shure V15 v and found it fantastic.
The V 15 IV is solid for 300 euros here. It’s an MM.
The contrary is a bit true. A Well Tempered simplex deserves at least an 1k MC cart. IMO.
I am not sure that is the contrary as the turntable you mention does not cost a few hundred euros or GBP but around 2k in the UK? I have never listened to one so I can’t say what level of cart would work best but if it can get the best out of a 1k cartridge then sure why not?
The Shure V15 type V-MR was a wonderful performer, but I believe it was discontinued years ago. Shure stopped production of the rest of their phono products in 2018, a truly sad event for many vinyl fans.
I checked , you are right. I thought it was more in the 5,6 k range.
So it’s more in the Rega P6 range. So indeed, something in the Rega Exact cart level then.
But you can have on EBay. Fremer tested one in September and was very pleased.
Not completely out of luck, many folks have reported very good results with the Jico SAS stylus replacements.
Good to know that - I have a V15 V-MR body somewhere and a sealed Shure MONO cart from back then!
I don’t go to shows, so I cannot comment. At home,I find that MCs trounce MMs in all respects.
But a question remains : will it match the Simplex arm?
It’s the same spirit as with cables. You will sometimes find people preferring lavender cables vs Superlumina or even micro wave powerblock vs an audiophile one. ![]()
Thanks, didn’t know there is a SL mk2.
Edit: It looks to be an ML but with a Shibata stylus.
