I’m saving up for some decent speakers for this unit, but in the meantime can anyone recommend a cheap pair of speakers (under £500/$700) that would work well with this? I like the Kef r3 meta / r7 meta with this, so was thinking of a cheaper pair of Kefs. Any other suggestions?
B&W seems a popular choice. I had the 702s2 floorstanders with my Star, worked a treat.
But speakers are very personal, so very hard to recommend, and at least B&W should be relatively easy to audition. If you like Kef, perhaps a pair of Q350 would suit you.
Definitely look at second hand/open box/graded options. Even imperfections you honestly can’t see can lead to paying way less and they can still sound perfect.
I have no comparison points, but I’m using 20yr old PMC GB1 s with my new nova and I’m very content with them. They seem to go at just a bit above that price on ebay.
I had PMC 25.21s with Nova - great combination. Do some auditioning if you can. A friend of mine has LS50’s and I find them a bit tiring. Just have a listen to a few speakers if you’re able
I ran a nova with R3’s (non meta) and liked the sound a lot. I upgraded the speakers and sold the R3’s for about £700 if I remember correctly, maybe that route ?
Rega RX1 or RX3 speakers both worked well with my Star at different times and in different room and you can easily pick them S/H up for your budget, possibly even a pair of RX5s. ATC SCM7s would also work well and you are likely to be able to pick up a pair S/H for your budget. Another choice is if you want the KEF house sound, then look to see what you can get second hand for your budget.
Somewhat tangential but since nobody else seems to have flagged this up yet, ebay have stopped charging sellers fees for private sellers. There are some caveats.
For better or worse this makes speculative hifi purchases with the option to resell even more attractive.
I couldn’t quite believe it was true but I’m £70 better off from selling some speakers, than I would have been 2 weeks ago.
I had an email about this - it was around 1st Oct.
For the stated budget, I’d do Qacoustics 3050i and probably never upgrade.
Naim and Qacoustics work wonderfully well and I’ve matched Uniti products with Qacoustics a couple times.
However, that’s me. Given the cost, the risk is lower, I understand, but obviously the simple answer is just, “well what does your dealer have in that range you can try?”
What do you mean by decent speakers? Is cheap, new or second hand?
If you look carefully and bide your time, there are great deals to be had, either on auction site or via a dealer for used; no need to splash the cash if buying wisely, so you might aim for buying once rather than upgrading. The later can be fraught since changing the speakers may alter the dynamics in a way you may not be satisfied.
Nova is a great piece of kit but depending on room, may need careful speaker matching. If decent also means demanding, then Nova may struggle. Lots of threads on Nova speakers in use.
Spendor works very, very well with Naim and the smaller speakers well with Nova - been there!
