Civility on the Forum

Please know that my purpose for opening this topic in the Lounge is not to troll anyone or to point a reprimanding finger at anyone.

I am opening it just to say that I have noticed (probably mistakenly) an uptick in less than polite posts and/or replies.

Being from the US, I do understand that there are different social norms and I do hope that I have acted in a universally polite manner here on the forum.

If I have not, or do not, please point it out immediately to me either within the post, a DM or via Richard Dane.

I ask this because over the many years I have visited the Naim Audio forums, I have received so much more than I can ever hope to return back to this community, a community that I cherish and respect.

It would be awful if some members were to step away in frustration.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Kind regards,

Ron

Always good to remind us all to be civilized. Thank god this is still a place for audio enthusiasts to help others and engage in friendly conversation. I have also learned a lot since I started lurking this forum.

I have spent more hours on this forum than I care to count (ask my wife!) but it always makes me sad how often threads descend into a fist fight, usually between a couple of members. If you have a beef with someone then sort it out in the car park outside the forum.
Remember, if you find a post offensive you can always report it to the Mighty Keeper of Moderation, Richard Dane

If by that you mean resort to sorting out by physical violence, as it seems to imply, then that is a wholly inappropriate and unacceptable suggestion. If people have a ā€˜beefā€™ with each other, as opposed to just disagreeing about some subject and arguing over it, then it should be sorted as civilly as the subject arguments should be, and at worst just agree to have nothing to do with each other.

IB, I donā€™t think Brown_Owl is suggesting any violence here, at least I certainly hope not.

I think this puts it well;

Unless it is a personal attack then there is a choice to ignore the comment that offends.

While itā€™s important to remember that disagreeing with someone does not necessarily constitute a personal attack, if any member does feel that another member has made an ad hominem personal remark about another member then please do flag it up to the moderator. I shall then take a view and act accordingly.

I was using the term ā€œcar parkā€ as a metaphor for an area outside of the forum (ie. DM each other). Violence solves nothing.

I would add that civility should extend to the hosts of this forum. What I have noted is less increased incivility between contributors but many more hostile comments aimed at Naim. By implication, and sometimes more overtly, such comments extend to @Richard.Dane as moderator, which is unfair, given his role.

Of course it is inevitable that there will be complaints, but sometimes the tone of the comments are unreasonably aggressive and expectations simply unrealistic. Iā€™m particularly surprised by negative comments from people who no longer have Naim gear but seem to enjoy feeding the negativity. This is particularly notable when it comes from people who have moved away from Naim to Linn, a company that closed down its forum some years ago. It would be a great loss to us all if Naim decided to do the same.

I was just thinking the same myself.

In general terms one wants a civil forum but not at the expense of the odd bit of banter.
Sometimes I think it can be too civilised with a positively Victorian outlook on all things to do with the good ship Naim from so many members.

A little less sycophancy would be a breath of fresh air.
Which along with a little less ā€œconcernā€ shown for Naim and its users by some members who have seen the light and ditched Naim altogether would be to all our benefit I feel.

By and large though itā€™s a nice place with a decent clientele.

Noted and accepted - the possible alternative meaning suggested itself as there is a similar expression used in places like pubs, not usually meaning verbal resolution

Absolutely! The odd bit of banter is priceless.

Without it I would not be reminded about saying something is ā€˜pants.ā€™

Couldnā€™t agree more, the forum is a free resource provided by and supported by Naim, albeit with loads of excellent volunteers like Richard et al, too many to mention. For goodness sake, they even let us play about with, OK evaluate :innocent:, their beta code!

If we want this to be discontinued, it usually takes very little for marketing folk to determine somethingā€™s not in their best interest, and if ā€˜banterā€™ starts to head in that direction, well weā€™ll only have ourselves to blame.

After all, this is supposed to be about our hobby, hifi, free expression, helping each other, etc., not global politics.

I think that that may be the crux of the problem. I donā€™t think that there is a Marketing department in the UK anymore.

Non! Allons y!

The crux of what problem exactly?

I was answering an earlier post. Buts thanks for your comment.

I think if we, as a group, wanted to engage the Naim marketing, product design or support teams, we could make that request.

Not speaking for Richard, but if we asked him for his thoughts on how to engage Naim, he might have some ideas or suggestions.

It was Richard who told me that there wasnā€™t really a Marketing department any more.

But Iā€™ll stand corrected if that has changed now.

That is interesting. I have to imagine members of the Naim UK team, contribute to the marketing efforts.
