Trade-in has advantages. 0% chance of getting scammed or other perturbations in the transaction. No need to list online, field low-ball offers, message with tire-kickers, etc. That’s all worth something. How much – “it depends.”
Not to mention the convenience. Staying home for someone not to turn up, or look at it and not buy it or try to renegotiate for whatever reason. I’m happy to “pay” for that bit not being my problem.
That might be because the dealers you have used are not the same as a typical Naim dealer.
Yes: you can meet some lovely people selling, but also some less lovely ones. If you’re short of time to waste, it’s a no-brainer…
Wasn’t this thread about how a first time buyer might make sense of the myriad … seemingly legitimate but diverse … options available in the marketplace?
Also keep in. ind, at least here in my US state, no sales tax paid on the trade in part, only the balance. So at 10%, that can add up. Despite getting seemingly much less than a private sale, I trade in often at my local camera dealer for much that reason (plus the eBay, PayPal fees add up).
This thread should have been called “How to confuse a Non-Audiophile”
This is a general remark/observation that can be in this thread or many others.
I’m always gobsmacked reading post along the lines of “I replaced the stock wires with xx power cord and I don’t hear any difference”. Weather it’s about a Powerline or something else doesn’t really matter. My inside voice always screams ‘it’s impossible not to hear a difference!’. Improvement or not is something else but… If a system is really not able to make differences between power cords audible, what does that say about the system?
Or is this expectation bias working both ways? This is going to be good vs. I’m not going to hear this? I don’t think so but I recently got Powerlines on all my boxes so it’s clear which side of the fence I’m on.
Of course
My feeling on this is that some people just don’t have the same connection with their system.
I liken it to demonstrating something new to the wife…
Hey darling come and listen to this….
Ok what are we listening to….
The new cables, doesn’t it sound good.
Sounds the same.

Schrodinger’s cables.
It does. DC resistance and Eddy Currents essentially have the same effect on a cable. As it can carry less current it will heat up more, unless it’s melting or becoming a fire hazard not so much an issue for your device.
Referring specifically to Eddy Currents, I’ve never read of any significant amount of those occurring at the power / frequency we’re talking about. That would only be a problem at far above audio frequencies, let alone domestic AC switching. BTW, I’m happy to be proven wrong here. But regardless, the only “issue” would be heat.
Microphonics are only an issue at very low signal levels, I don’t see how they would affect an ac cord with the voltages and current it carries. Any noise already present on your line likely drowns it out regardless.
That sounds like my wife. I recently had a bit of a windfall biz wise, and was thinking of an Atom HE to either replace the V1/opticaRendu or the UQ1 in the office. Started to head out to the hifi dealer, and my wife, said, adamantly, Why??!! What you have sounds perfectly fine. And you know what? She was right. So I went off to the camera store instead and spent even more $, but at least it’s what I do and I can write it off the taxes.
Scott,
Decided upon a non-Naim system. The Aesthetix Mimas integrated amp with onboard DAC, an Aurender streamer, and a pair of gorgeous DALI Epicon 6 speakers, with TARA Labs cables and interconnects. Sounds amazing. Connected to WIFI via a mesh network node for now. Thanks for your help and encouragement.

It sounds like the majority of spouses :
- Is it new ?
- Yes.
- The one you had before is broken ?
- No
- …………………
I was the same way a year ago. I wanted to step up from the “big box store” equipment that I had (Sony ES, Cambridge SoundWorks/Henry Kloss speakers) to about a $20k system. I got a Naim Uniti Nova, Focal Kanta No. 2 speakers, NAC A5 cables, some IsoAcoustics Gaia II speaker feet, a Rega RP3 turntable and a Schiit Mani phono preamp. All of that would retail for about $20k today (I actually got a bundle price from Naim/Focal). I grin ear to ear every time I turn it on!! Such a wonderful upgrade!
Yes, common sense, but seems ignored by some comsumers (with lots of cash or no sense, i used to belong to the latter
).
