This has been mentioned a couple of times on the forum but I haven’t been able to see it how it is actually done. And it is not one of the options shown in the connection guide. Any help is appreciated - thank you! @QuickSticks, if I am not mistaken, I think you are one of the ones who have had this configuration.
A 250 is shown here connected to the Hicap (socket 3), but the principle is the same when using a 300.
Connect the two DIN4 to XLR cables that come with the 300 to sockets 2 and 3 on the right hand Hicap.
Remember at the 300 end to connect green band DIN4 to XLR to Ch1, red band to Ch2.
As far as I know, output sockets 1-3 are all identical on the Hi-Cap DR and are there for cases when one wants to connect it to both a 300DR and a subwoofer using the low-level connection.
Exactly Dan - they are daisy chained, from a signal perspective, to socket 4.
Sockets 2 and 3 are recommended here as they are the closest to socket 4.
Correct TK, I have exactly this setup.
The details above cover the connections, but I’ll try and take you some pictures of mine later if you’d like😊
The key is making sure that thr hicap that gets the " signal " is the one connected to the power amp.
We will all at some point have got them around the wrong way and wondered why there is no sound.
You are all the very best! Thanks so much, all of you. This forum is so helpful. And the pictures are really appreciated, @QuickSticks
I’ve been able to source a used 300 DR at a good price (not super common in Canada). It doesn’t have the din4-xlr cables so I’ll order some today at my dealers. I’ll report back when I receive them.
Again, my thanks to all of you.
Interested to hear your impressions of the 300DR in your system. It so happens we have almost the same setup (part form speakers) and a 300DR might be a possibility here in the near future. No doubt it will sound good, but always nice to have a report on how you find it differs from the 250 DR
Regards
For sure! I’m looking forward to making the comparison and will let you know my impressions.
I think the two DIN-XLR cables are not identical.
That´s why one has a green band the other red.
They are not, but they could be.
Right: the mono pair has a red one and a green one.
I have a 282+HicapDr+300DR. The 300DR is a dual-mono 2 box amp/ps, maybe better served by a Supercap than a pair of different serial numbers Hicaps.
I agree the 300DR is likely better served by a SuperCap, but it is not a dual mono amplifer since it only has one transformer on the power supply, similar to the SuperCap. On the other hand, two HiCaps will turn a 282 into a dual mono preamp.
Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn’t really considered this. Food for thought. Right now I am very happy with the 282 with 2 HiCaps. And the HiCaps are very closely matched, made within half a year or so of each other.
I don´t know if a dual-mono means two transformers, what I know is that the 300DR has two Burndy cables between the PS and the amp, one for each channel.
What I know also is that a SupercapDR is a massive upgrade over a HicapDR for a 282-300DR configuration. Home tested.
Two Hicaps never tested. Not the modification done by a UK dealer to the 282 to make it a (almost) 252 and better support the Supercap.
I have no doubt that a Supercap DR is an upgrade over a single HiCap DR powering a 282. Is it a an upgrade over 2 HiCap DR’s powering a 282 ? I’m firmly in the camp that it isn’t and there are plenty of other people on the forum that are of the same opinion as well.
There are plenty of HC vs SC threads. All end with each us advocating for what we have ( usually).
The SC has the same transformer and 2 big caps as one HC. Only real difference is all the DR modules and napsc psu. Most of which a 282 cant use.
A SC invariably leads to a 252. Only buy one if that is where you are heading.
No surprise that having separate dual voltage rails for each channel would lead to better sound. Utilizing two HiCapDRs should produce comparable, if not superior results, as it eliminates the unnecessary complexity of six extra regulators that the 282 does not utilize, along with the drawbacks of a shared transformer. The extra circuitry is what makes the SuperCap pricier, those regulaltors are very expensive, and unless you are planning to get a 252 in the future, the massive increase in price is hardly justifiable.
