Connecting Wiim Ultra to Nap 90/3: Hum

Hi All,

Just jumped into Naim for the 1st time after picking up a Nap 90 series three. Looks so much nicer in real life than in the pictures!

My Source is a Wiim Ultra and my speakers are Neat Iota. I’m trying the NAP in place of a Bel Canto Class D that has worked flawlessly with the Wiim.

Music plays but there is a loud hum. There is a banana plug that plugs into the back of the Wiim for a ground if you are using a Turntable. I tried connecting this to the Earth of a power cable and plugging into the mains but it doesn’t make any difference.

Anyone got any ideas? Totally new to the world of Naim.

Cheers all.

Try connecting the ground cable to somewhere on the Nap 90 itself. Not sure the best place to do so would be. Maybe wrap the bare ground wire around one of the foot screws making sure the wire is under the rubber foot

Cheers, will try that tonight.

Assuming you are using the Wiim as a preamp:

Take a wire from the shell of one of the analogue RCA sockets (preferably an output socket), leaving the centre pin unconnected, and cable tie that to the mains lead for the Wiim, then take it to the ‘Earth’ pin of a mains plug, plugged into the same multiway mains block as both the Wiim and the power amp.

If this doesn’t work, then there is something very odd going on.

I think you meant to reply to the OP…the WiiM has a ground pin for its phono input that should work to take to a ground on the 90.

Found the ground screw on the bottom of the Nap. I connected this to the ground port on the back of the Wiim and it sounds exactly the same.

I’ll try making a custom cable from the audio out to the power block.
