Contrived audiophile terminology

I’ll start:

Veil has been lifted

Blacks are inkier.

Reading these is almost as irritating as young people starting every sentence with “so” .

There was a whole thread on this in the old forum. Alas the search function has rendered the old forum utterly useless.

My favourite audiophile hyperbole was when someone buys the next mousetrap and proclaims the old one is “broken”.

After listening to my BigglesBox 5000, my old ND555 sounds broken

That sort of rubbish.

So, look, to be honest, if I may, with all due respect … my wife heard no difference when in Wales, apart from that it was night & day, so much more PRaT.

It almost made Emerson, Lake and Palmer tolerable.

Contrived? That phrase, used in commenting upon a changed sound or comparison between two sounds is one of the more descriptive, far more meaningful than many terms used in descriptions of sound (e.g. “more forward”)

Just say it sounds better than before then.
Contrived.

It has brought synergy into the system,

Reproduction is more natural,

With a more 3D soundstage.

Overall a toe-tapping addition!

“Veil has been lifted” may be a cliche but It’s a good and pretty accurate description of a change in sound presentation IMO and not at all captured by the bland and near meaningless “it sounds better”.

Heaven help us if we have to have our posts approved by the style police before we submit them.

It seems most people are taking this thread for what it is…a light hearted opinion led exercise on terminology and descriptions you find over the top and contrived. It’s opinion and there is no point countering someone’s examples.
If you disagree, scroll past or we will be here all year.

The musicians are literally in the room.

More musical – or musicality have to be my pet hates.

Yes…musical… what exactly does that mean?

level of engagement that is astonishing
expansive room filling sound
quick as a flash and a lovely engaging sound
remarkable quite how big speakers so small can sound
the bass flaps my trousers
the whole sound will open up
they just get out of the way and let the music or whatever simply flow
it’s all much freer and the depth of bass is really most surprising
the sound is most beguiling
incredibly tight and fast with not a hint of boom…

a really significant uplift in performance in everyway
more analogue

What does contrived mean ? Especially with something as contrived as listening to an expensive hifi.

I think this thread is closely related to the Audio Myths thread. When people cannot properly name what is happening in objective terms, or whether anything is actually happening at all, they will more easily resort to vague or poetic terms to describe their subjective experiences.

Consider the UEF record clamps, only €895.00 each:

Now that would be some system.

Or a black box with one button, labelled “Off”.
