Core restore question?

Does anyone know if it is possible, and if so how, to restore a backup made from one Core to a different Core - @davidhendon perhaps?

Many thanks for any thoughts.

I’m pretty sure that you can restore a backup from another Core. What you can’t do is use a backup made on one Core as a backup on another Core. You have to make a new full backup on the new Core.

Also you could always use any backup as a source for an Import, but likely it will all end up in the download folder. The only significance of that is that you wouldn’t be able to edit the metadata with the Naim app if the Import put it all into the downloads folder.

Hmmm…. Tried using an SSD backup and stopped after getting questions about ā€˜assigning’ folders that I didn’t fully understand :slightly_frowning_face:.

Will try again later after I’ve had a bit of a think .

Admittedly I didn’t actually ever do this. I have restored a backup to a new music store on the same Core and got no questions about assigning folders. It just put things in the same folders that they were in before.

I’ll report findings back over the weekend when I’ll give it a go.

In the very fortunate position of having a 2nd Core to try it out on . If it all goes pear shaped, I’ll just reset the Core.

You don’t even need to do that. You just go into Manage Music and configure a new Music Store on the same internal SSD and agree to format it.

Noted :+1:.

Please do report back on how you get on. I may need to do something similar in the not too distant future, i.e. run a second duplicate core in another location (if all goes to plan). Thanks.

A friend of mine, who isn’t a forum member but has a lot of Naim kit, has two Cores and I just asked him how he put the music on his second Core (which is for his holiday flat) and he says he restored to his second Core from a backup of his first Core, just as I thought (and basically what I advised him too, a few months ago).

I guessed it must be possible at it would be how the music collection would be recreated on a replacement Core following a catastrophic failure of the original.

Well, restore in progress, for some reason the software insists on reformatting the Core’s internal storage, brand new, previously initialised but not used, before allowing the restore to proceed……:person_shrugging:.

Yes that’s right. It does!

Is it possible to ā€œrestoreā€ a Core from a Unitiserve backup?
(I.E. to put the Unitiserve content onto a new Core)

Thanks for any info!

Possibly, @davidhendon is your man.

If I recall, I imported a FLAC based US backup to an Innuos Zenith Mk III and subsequently repeated the trick to on to a Uniti Core.

Thank you.

I should clarify, I IMPORTED the files from the backup device, I don’t think you can use the Backup Restore function between different devices……. and I don’t believe the process would work well for US ripped files, only those in the Downloads folder.

Again @davidhendon may be able to clarify further.

It is exactly as @Osiris says. You can import a US store into a Core, but not restore from one. But the Core should recognise they are Naim server rips and put them in the Core’s Music Store in the Music/MQ folder (so you can edit metadata with the F/Naim app) rather than the Downloads folder where you can’t edit the metadata except with a PC/Mac.
