D’Angelo, no longer with us

“Michael Eugene Archer, known to his fans as D’Angelo, died aged 51 after a battle with cancer, his family said in a statement.”

“The influential singer was known for pioneering the genre of neo-soul, which blends R&B music with other genres including hip-hop and jazz.”

I’ve got the two albums above, and, for me, he was a quite unique artist, who’ll be sadly missed.

R.I.P. Michael, and thank you so much for all the choons.

I’m just hearing about this. 51 years young. Cancer :frowning:

Sad news, what an album Brown Sugar is.

All three of his albums are great, with Black Messiah being my favourite. I had tickets for the UK tour in 2018 or 2019, but it was cancelled without any explanation. I wonder if his cancer has been an issue for some time.

He was certainly one of a kind. We did see him live In London, probably pre 2018. He arrived on stage at least 45 minutes late, but once the band started playing you forgave him for keeping everyone waiting. I suspect he was somewhere else “partying” but the party continued on stage and it was a wonderful hugely memorable occasion.

Friend introduced me to Black Messiah. An unlikely choice for them as a jazz and classical fan but they loved the bass. It took a while to hit for me but nowadays I think it’s a quite extraordinary record. Brawn Sugar I could see the attraction but it never really clicked. Sounded too much like too many other people. Black Messiah though… something out on its own.

i am just playing “really love” from black messiah, a brilliant track. Mish mash of classical guitar, strings and wonderful harmonies.

Very sad to hear of the passing of D’Angelo at the young age of 51 due to cancer. Over a 30 year career he only released three albums the first of which ‘Brown Sugar’ was a 90’s Soul classic that is best remembered and still played by me.
