Dan visits Dunc system bake off

I visited @Dunc yesterday and on arrival was attacked by 6 dogs as I tried to scramble into his house. His house was easy to find with about 10 vehicles parked outside all with his name on them!

Once my son and I managed to get in we went to the listening room. It’s a converted garage so about 8ft x 16ft, so a difficult room for speakers.

The system on test is a beast of a system. Integrated Vitus SIA 030 amp 30w pure class A and then as you turn up the volume it’s 200 watts per channel class AB.
Kudos Titan 808s.
dCS streaming Vivaldi with DAC, Network Player and Clock. Also Melco.
Turntable Thales with two arms, Allnic H7000 phonostage.

So what’s it like? It’s not just good. It’s superb. The streamer is clear, low noise floor, incredibly detailed. Flows beautifully and sounds incredible. This was my favourite of Dunc’s two sources.

The Thales is a fine turntable with a clever main tonearm with the headshell rotating on the tonearm as it plays ensuring perfect accuracy. The phonostage is Valve based. The turntable is more laidback than the streamer.

The Vitus has oodles of power and a very 3 dimensional soundstage and fantastic bass control.

The speakers are great with superb bass control and a clearly a quality product.

So how did it compare to my full 500 system? Well they are both brilliant. The dCS Vivaldi is better sounding than my ND555 in my opinion. It has more texture, more detail, lower noise floor and with Dunc’s amp a wider soundstage.

The 500 DR series amplification is different to the Vitus. For me I prefer the flow and groove of the 500DR. But Vitus has more power, more control of bass, wider soundstage and lower noise floor. The Vitus is technically better.

I am a big Naim man so prefer my 500DR amp probably because it’s what I have. But I cannot deny how good the Vitus is.

As for my LP12 Klimax, I prefer it to the Thales. I think it’s a bit more resolved and fluid.

It’s so hard to compare the two. I would say I am definitely justifying my purchases.

Dunc’s system is technically better but has a different presentation to Naim. Dunc changed out from Naim as he didn’t get on with the ND555 and found the dCS Rossini better. He just couldn’t make a Naim system work with the dCS. I think once you start changing out from Naim the rest follows.

For me I am delighted with the 500DR system and Linn LP12 Klimax and have no intention of changing it out for other stuff.

As for Dunc. What is he like? He is a great guy. A great host, very intelligent, articulate and knowledgeable. He is very direct, but so am I. My son Harrison enjoyed the visit and he also loved Dunc’s system. He preferred Dunc’s streamer to mine, but preferred the LP12 Klimax to the Thales. He really liked the bass control of the Vitus and the sound of the speakers.

I look forward to your visit to mine Dunc!

Great write up @Dan_M a d good to hear you and Harrison enjoyed your day.

@Dunc how far apart are your speakers and how close to the sidewalls? My move later in the year will leave me in a possibly similar situation with my T808s.

Myself and Harrison managed to visit Althorp House and Gardens. The house where Princess Diana grew up and home of the Spencers. Very interesting.

And how was the curry :grinning:?

Hmm, Duncs house looks much larger at the outside than the inside.

The curry house was closed so Duncs Mrs made Pizza, garlic bread and salad. Very nice with some home grown salad!

So now listening to my LP12 Klimax, my favourite source and the system just flows so well.

The thing I want to say about a Naim 500DR system is if you have the complete set up it provides system synergy. It just all sounds very resolved and wonderful.

Duncs system is amazing. I love it! But there is something special about Naim that I cannot explain. It just flows effortlessly. The music gets me in the my soul. Only way to explain it.

I was talking to Harrison about it and he said he has loved all my Naim systems.

A top flight LP12 with full 500DR system just has something like an X factor that is not technical. It just flows so well.

Anyway, that’s how my system sounds to me.

To try to answer why things went wrong with Dunc’s Naim system. The ND555 sounded the same as NDS. And then he heard the dCS Rossini which he thought was better. And then when he took the 552DR out of the system it sounded even better. The problem then became that the dCS Vivaldi can be used with a power amp only. But not necessarily with turntables as Vivaldi can act as a preamp as well for digital. So it can go direct to power amp. But with turntable it becomes more complicated as it does not accept analogue.

The 552DR added to the dCS made it sound worse. Taken out Dunc found the dCS and 500DR sounded better. Trying to resolve this became difficult as he has a turntable. That is where the Vitus integrated amp came in.

He can explain things better than me. Bottom line is he was happy with 500DR. The 552DR was letting the dCS down. So he made the change to Vitus integrated.

I think he has been very brave. One thing he said to me was if you cut him half it would have had Naim in his body.

He has reluctantly gone to the other side.

Just reflecting Dan, what a year you are having…500 system in place, visit to Naim HQ and starting your UK tour of Naim Forum members …oh and of course Russian Techno to assist in the battle of your physical challenges…keep rocking in the free world as Neil Young would say :sunglasses:

Definitely David. Doing the visits to see systems is a great thing to do. We should all be doing it. If you want to come and see me you are welcome my friend.

I have been listening to my system all night since I got home and the system sounds so fluid and integrated. The ND555 with 2 555PSDRs is sounding absolutely awesome.

It is not as detailed and does not have the texture of the dCS Vivaldi. But it rocks with Russian Techno.

I think Naim works well with Rock and Dance music. It’s very forward sounding and keeps my feet tapping.

I think if I started putting in different kit it would upset the synergy.

Will get @Dunc over here and I am sure he will have an opinion!
