Dealing with multi-disc albums - a Minimserver 'solution'

Back in January 2023 I asked here how folks dealt with multi-disc albums.

How do you deal with multi-disk albums? (Naim app and Minimserver) - Streaming Audio - Naim Audio - Community

I’ve now revisited this having purchased David Hepworth’s 4 CD collection Deep 70s, and I’ve got the solution working although it’s a little bit clunky. Having said that, it’s probably how it has to work.

My normal practice with discs ripped into minimserver was to put all discs into one folder with the tracks named sensibly like 1-01 Track 01. This means the album would appear as a single listing, but all tracks would appear as one long list with no indication where the different discs were split.

One solution suggested by the minimserver manual is to use the album title to differentiate. This means the tracks in the first disc of my new collection are labelled as Deep 70s (disc 1: Young Americans) with obvious variants for the other discs.

Browsing by artist to Various Artists gives me one listing for this album as I’d want. Clicking into this shows the image below (browsing on my iPhone):

It has the >> Young Americans entry for the first disc followed by all of the first disc tracks, then >> Disc 2 etc. Clicking into this then allows me to play just the tracks from disc 1, and I can do the same for the other discs by scrolling down to find the >> entry. (Holding the >> icon then clicking Play doesn’t seem to work, you need to click through.)

It seems a little clunky, but I’m not sure what I’d want to see. I guess it’s still necessary to list all the tracks for the full albums. Perhaps it should then present five icons - one for the full album and one for each disc.

Anyway, I’ve achieved what I wanted, albeit not exactly with the slickest interface. Perhaps one of the beta group could give this a go and feed back to the development team?

(Note that the minimserver notes say that the A-Z sorting option must be off.)

I just name each disc, Disc 1/2 for example.
Then each track is labelled 1, 2, 3, etc and if disc 1 or disc 2, they all list in one line but display with a differentiating disc number.

I do the same but that doesn’t help in the Naim app (unless there’s something else I’m missing). Can you show a screen shot of how it looks in the Naim app?

Here it is but, as you mentioned, it doesn’t differentiate between CD1 or CD2, they just run on, although in the correct order.

In Asset, there is an option to add the disc number which makes it look like this, which I personally don’t really like.

Track number, Disc number, track name.

I agree - I don’t like this. It’d be better if the disc number could go before the track number.

Having said this, I don’t think this options is available in Minimserver (other than editing every track name to add it in, rather than just in the filename).

What’s the best route to feed development suggestions to the app / software team at Naim?

If you mean regarding the handling of multidisc albums, you’d be better off off contacting the Minimserver guys.

I have Minim server on one of my Synology NAS drives which I don’t use. I’ll fire it up (when I get a moment) and look to see if there’s a hidden setting somewhere.

Using JRiver (with the Disc # Field) and JRemote, I get this.

I had forgotten that I only have the basic free version of MininServer with limited functionality, so I can’t even check if Disc number is a possibility.

Using the paid for version of Asset, I can make it appear like this in the Naim app, showing disc 1 and disc 2.

This is the setting in Asset server, under the Multi-Disc Album tab. Without selecting that option, it only lists one album, with all tracks from the two CD’s running one CD ofter the other.

This is what I’d like to see with Minimserver / Naim. I’m assuming you can play the individual discs separately. JRiver / JRemote doesn’t seem to be an option for me with my Melco (unless I run it on an additional PC/laptop).

Yes, this is doable in Minimserver, but not what I want.

I can certainly start on Disc 2, but if I start playing Disc 1 it will continue on to Disc 2 unless I stop play. That has never bothered me.
