Demoing

Hi, first post so apologies if this is an old topic but I can’t find it..,

I’ve just added a Klimax DSM to sit alongside my Sondek both feeding my 282, Hicap into a 250DR and then into my Ovators. I feel I’m as far down the source first track as I can/want go and want to upgrade the 282 to a 252 or 552 obviously with a Supercap…. My challenge is now dealers are obviously focusing on the new classic range and although I’d like to hear for myself the differences I’m not sure that is realistic, ideas please. Also im nervous buying from an auction site so a secondary question is are there any really good independents that could help. Thanks ever so in advance

Where in the world are you. I live in the NE of England and there is a fantastic independent near me, who are happy to demo / loan with pressure to by new stuff.

I know I could by cheaper from an auction site, but I value service, trust and a warranty on new gear.

Thanks for the fast response, I’m near Milton Keynes so a trip up is probably a bit far, but I might, as I too value service hugely

Give Tom Tom Audio a call - they’ll help you out…

If you are in the UK, there should be Naim dealers around you who will have some used stock available in PX. In my experience, they will be helpful. I understand your nervousness about buying from auction sites. The good thing about buying used from a Naim dealer is that they will offer a 3-month warranty and support if something goes wrong. They will not offer items that are knowingly substandard.

Search Naim dealers own websites. Often they are selling on good condition trade-ins (preloved) or ex demo or clearance of discontinued stock directly and often with a warranty.

Nothing to add except, welcome to the forum.

That’s true, but you should still check the age and service history of any used gear. A dealer who has taken something as a trade-in usually won’t be sending it back to Naim if it’s due a service, so you should always try to understand exactly what you’re getting.

That’s the point of going to a Naim dealer they will be able to tell you that info.

The “old stuff”, whether new or used will be less expensive than the new stuff. And the old stuff sounded pretty good before the new stuff was released, and still sounds pretty good! You might do a search for old vs new, and end up saving a bunch of money.

Not necessarily. They have no control over what happens to anything while it’s not in their possession.

If I was in Milton Keynes I would talk to Paul at the HiFi Lounge near Biggleswade. He’s been a Naim dealer for several years and could advise you.

the dealer can find out if the item has been serviced at Naim or indeed enquire at Class A. the serial number will tell them and you how old it is.

I absolutely understand this.

Got a NAC 282 some years ago snd powered with older Hicaps.

Planned to upgrade to NAC 252 and bought a slightly discounted Supercap DR as a step in the upgrade path. Then NAC 252 discontinued.

Can you look for a 252 on the used market? From someone who “moved up” to the new classic?

The only “new” kit I’ve ever bought was my first NAIM some 30 years ago. Every thing since has been a trade up,

A quick call to the factory will provide service history. You need the serial numbers of course!
