i am in need for the naim community knowhow
till last month i owned
NAC-N 172 XS
NAP 200
ALLAE
As my Girlfriend only used her TV for audio and a small radio for music i thought that is my chance for a change
so with my audio dealer
i made a deal
i use my nacn 172 with a nap 175 and Neat petite classic
at home i upgraded from the 172 to a 272 with the already owned nap200
now the sound changed in a weard way
it sounds more boomy (iam not a fan of too much bass)
and i found out with naim app and balance that the right side id crisper and louder than left
i never had the feeling with the 172xs
the stage got smaller
has anybody an idea? maybe the 272 is faulty ?
thank you
First, are you using the exact same power amp and speakers with the 272 that you had with the 172, and are they set up in the same way, speakers in the same location etc?
The 272 is technically a better performer than the 172, but it’s possible that it has a wider frequency response and is therefore putting more bass into your room. This could be exposing problems with your room acoustics that were not noticeable with the 172.
yes everything is the same, nap200 naim allae, room and possition of the speakers
the only thing what changed was 172 too 272
to add between i had an NAC 202 and NDX 1 with my NAP200 and there i too had not the feeling of more boomy bass
i changed back to NAC-N 172 because i find it had nicer controlls like max loudness or channel louder or lower so i could level each channel to the same loudness
If you’re referring to ‘input trim’ you should have that on both 172 and 272. Still, strange that the 272 doesn’t sound right. I think you need to talk to your dealer about it.
The NDX has no input trim because it has no volume control. The improved performance of separates usually means less convenience. You should have it on the 272 though.
Have you re-positioned the speakers? The NAC-N272 will be superior in bass quality and extension to the 172 so could cause boom in the room without some adjustment. Source and pre-amp upgrades sometimes require some additional minor adjustment to speaker positioning in this regard. However, with a mono source you should have the same loudness on the left side as the right. If it isn’t soo, it could be because of an odd shaped room or some piece of furniture causing a slight imbalance, or it could be a fault somewhere. Is it imbalanced via headphones?
272/200 should work just fine together. I think you should discuss it with your dealer. Perhaps they could have a listen in their demo room and see if it sounds right there compared to an alternative.
The 272 is a big step up from a 172 in my experience, yet the OP mentions at least three ways in which it’s worse. The extra bass extension of the 272 could account for the boominess, but not the others issues. Given that the NDX/202 didn’t boom, it looks as if it’s time to contact the dealer.
thank you all for your very good suggestions
i will try with a headphone in a week or so need one with a cable
the left speaker is less clearer then the right, i even changed the upper parts of the speakers and still the left is weard on its sound volume
so i will try with positioning
yes maybe i need to downgrade to a second 172 because maybe just maybe the 272 is to strong for my Allaes or room (even if the NDX had not the problem)
i will write about my status after i contaced the dealer and tried repositioning
