Din to RCA or RCA to RCA

I have a CD5X & Flatcap connected to a Heed Obelisk Mk3 using a Van Den Hul C5 The Bay RCA cable.

Would I get better results using a Din to RCA ?

In my experience with Naim equipment I’ve always had better results using DIN plugs, even with DIN to RCA. I haven’t used a CD5X though.

If you use the same type of cable, probably yes.

However, the cable itself is more important than the cable termination.

I was thinking of something around £150 for a Din to RCA, maybe an Audioquest Big Sur for example which is around that price point.

Are there other cable recommendations in this price range for a Din to RCA?

I would use any Chord Co option that matches your budget. DIN to RCA. Anything but VDH on Naim which I suggest you will agree with when you hear it.

You could do worse than Naim’s own cable. A bit under £150 at present, I think.

For the sake of completeness, the system is: Wiim Pro Plus Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 Naim NAIT XS B&W 865 I recently bought a second-hand Lavender RCA-DIN interconnect to connect the DAC to the NAIT and replace a cheap RCA cable used previously. Upon installing it, the sound became more flat and with less bass. When my friend tried to disconnect the cable and try the old one again, the two RCA plugs…

Presumably you’re talking about speaker cable used with older Naim amps.

The OP is using a Naim cd player and a non Naim amp.

Yes, marginally.

As I have written many times down the years on the forums (fora) pressure contact interconnects are a weak link in signal integrity. Phono to Phono has 8 pressure connections. Phono to DIN has 7… it’s not much, but tangible and factual. DIN to DIN is 6 and better still, that is a 25% improvement in performance all other things being equal compared to stereo phono to phono.

I’m unconvinced that a few bad experiences really mean the lavender cable is especially fragile when used with care. It certainly doesn’t look that impressive but it’s SQ that counts and unless I missed it there is no comparison of SQ, which is always the overriding factor in Naim designs.

As a DIN to DIN version the stock lavender cable is fine and quite robust and can be heavy handled, but with those quite heavy RCA plugs on the end of it is not. Very delicate in fact, almost borderline with a HiLine on those terms.
