Disk or player problem?

Good evening to all of you, I have a Naim CD5XS player that had its laser replaced a few weeks ago. Today I noticed that it doesn’t read a CD (only this one … it seems, all the others do). The problem is that at the 7th track it suddenly stops, then continues playing and then stops definitively with the message “Err” on the display. However, I noticed that this “defective” CD player works both on the car player and on the PC. What could have happened? Thanks to whoever answers

Antony, was the laser replaced by the service dept. at Naim?

Yes of course

Ah OK thanks. Good to hear that Naim are again able to replace VAM1202s ( @NeilS are you able to confirm?) I would get in touch with your dealer who arranged the service with Naim as unfortunately it would seem that either the replacement mech is already failing or something else is amiss. It’s a pain but at least it will be warranted.

No, nothing has changed with regard to repairs on these players.
I wonder if just the platter was damaged and replaced?

Regards
Neil.

Antony, what does your Naim service sheet say was done/replaced?

I believe the piece is original; the technician I turned to has great experience in repairing Naim players but is not an official service. The platter was not damaged, only the laser was replaced. However, no one answered my question, namely: why does it not read that CD well, skips the track and the word “err” appears?

Ah, Ok, so not serviced by Naim. It could be a number of things most likely mech related. There’s a lot of rubbish VAM1202s out there and even Naim were getting to the point where trying to sort the good from the bad was getting unsustainable. Your best bet would be to get back in touch with whoever did the work as it should be guaranteed, especially if only done a few weeks ago.

I had Naim/Focal NA replace the laser in my CDS3 but it proved to be defective. No guarantee that the replacement lasers are good and mine exhibited the same symptoms as yours. Good luck.

Guys, you got distracted in discussions only about the availability of the spare part: the optical laser. After much research I can give you the solution myself. So, my cd does not have the “compact disc digital audio” logo, so it is simply not compliant with the redbook standard (or maybe it is a copy protected). My old Naim is not the latest generation, so it simply does not read it!

Your best bet is probably to make a copy of the affected disc using a CD making program and play the CD copy instead.

Tolerances. The CD is probably at one end of the allowable specs and the Naim is at the other. Anything in between will play the CD, just not the Naim. And any other CD will play on the Naim, just not that one.

Frustrating, I know! I think the above advice is best. Rip the CD on your computer and burn it to a CDR (not CDRW) and the burned disc will undoubtedly play on your Naim.
