Do I need a decoder?

OK, here we go…
PREAMP: NAC72
2 CHANNEL AMP: NAP250
3 CHANNEL AMP: NAPv175
DVD/SACD PLAYER: Magnetar UDP900
TUNER: NAT03

I am afraid I already know the answer to these questions…

QUESTION #1: I wanted SACD, DVD-A 5.1 channel audio and 5.1 DVD and TV audio. So I bought the above components.

I hooked up the DVD/SACD player to the CD input of the 72. There are RCA outputs from the DVD/SACD player that I run to the amplifiers. Here is a picture of the back panel for reference:

There are no INPUTS on this device to take the sound from the TV to the UDP900 to send to the amplifiers. So I would need a decoder to make this happen. Correct?

QUESTION #2: While hooking up the NAPv175 to the DVD player, and running the “sound check” program via the DVD player, the speakers reveal another problem…Unequal volume. The satellites are LOUD. I suppose I could get inline RCA attenuators. Would anyone have a guess as to what decibel level? Or would a good decoder have independent volume adjustments for all the speakers, including the satellite speakers?

The short answer here is yes, you will need a processor - probably best with a 5.1 analogue input.

The NAPV175 should not be directly connected to the DVD player, it should be connected to the processor which will allow you to set all the levels correctly.

One issue I can see here is that the NAC72 has not got an input with unity gain, so you will need to set the volume control on the 72 whenever you use the processor for multi-channel use.

Thanks. Good thing I bought a 10 outlet strip.
