Does anyone think that the price of Naim stuff nowadays is a bit expensive

Nah, it’s me with a screw loose…

Thank you @Naim.Marketing. I wonder whether discount will trickle down to this corner of the globe. I won’t expect it just to be on the safe side.

It has already Google Naim/Focal

The bundles (inc speaker cable) are available globally to all Focal and Naim dealers/distributors - as ever, it’s their choice whether to take them, and what pricing to offer. We plan to have a list of participating dealers available on our website once the deal goes live next week; we’re just starting to spread the news a few days early, to give everyone a heads-up.

A decade ago we decided that if we are to make major purchases, we would go for brands that are known as being built to last, rather than having to change stuff every few years or so. This applied to everything, be it audio equipment or any other household items. That is why we have Naim equipment, for not only does it sound wonderful, but their products are built to last. Similarly for the Miele appliances in the kitchen.

The logic was that, in a time when our income drops as retirement beckons, the last thing we want is to have to fork out cash for replacement items. This makes sense for us, and we don’t regret making this decision.

It’s official! In relative terms Naim is not expensive - for a mere £10k including speakers and speaker cable you get what Naim and Focal consider to be the Ultimate Music Streaming System!!! Forget 500 series, even Statement: they are all beaten by the diminutive and relatively cheap Nova when combined with the Focal Kanta No.2 speakers!

In my case, retirement beckoned some time ago, and in years to come, if I get really lucky, then my hearing will have deteriorated to the point where the expense of carrying out the 10/15 year servicing on my kit will become completely unnecessary!

I have Naim NAC32.5 and NAP140 given for servicing. In the meantime borrowed latest Yamaha amplifier. After 30 minutes, I get fedup, not enjoying my musical experience of Naim. With Naim audio, I listen for 5 hours daily and want to hear more. Worth the price I paid for.

Interesting. Can the speaker cable length be increased, at cost of course?

Roger

We are supplying the speaker cables in pre-terminated pairs, but - as ever - it’s worth talking to your dealer to see if they’d offer an alternative

Just go on fewer holidays and drink cheaper wine. HiFi always comes first!

Holidays are what expands your life and makes it interesting. If you look at analyses of what people spend in retirement then holidays are the biggest item. If I could never upgrade again or never have a holiday I know which I’d choose.

Sadly, holidays are on hold this year for the obvious reason. But rather than blowing the money on hifi it is saved for when the opportunity returns, my hifi being at a level now where on the whole significant spend is likely to only bring marginal difference, whereas holidays will not only be enjoyable in themselves, but will give shared memories to savour in years to come when (hopefully!). 30 years ago I’d probably have decided the other way round.

Living up on the High Weald I simply leave the cottage with walking boots and friend, take in the odd pub seven today. Nothing like the odd 6 mile walk on the doorstep without travelling miles. I’ve done both and simply like what I do. No harm in that surely. We’re not all the same.
I have a BA Gold Card for life thanks to years of company travel - the only thing I miss about travel is the BA First Class Lounge at LHR.

Are Naim products expensive? My two pence worth. ( actually my 3 pence worth)

Products like Naim, Rolex etc are very expensive in terms of the materials/parts for your outlay.

However, if you get years of service from them, they start to become really good value.

For example, I bought a Naim Aro in 91, for £660, about £1500 in today’s value. A serious chunk of a month’s salary for most people. I wasn’t earning mega-bucks at the time and some of my close friends and work colleagues thought I was crackers.
It gets used most days.
My £660 outlay has cost me about £23 per year or 6p per day. Or about 14p per day if you take £1500. Astonishing value for a “Premier League” product that has given so much joy.
I could probably sell it for about £1200, a loss of £300 in real terms. If I did I would have had 29 years of use at less than 3p per day. If I could get £1500 for it, it would have been free.

My LP12 has a similar equation.

Generally, buying the best you can afford is sound advice imho.
