Downsizing. But not through choice

Exactly what I was suggesting earlier. I’m actually shocked at the apparent lack of tact/empathy.

Sure, at £160k+, if you have it. But I’m sure that doesn’t help in this instance.

We all, in majority, have moments in life when we need cash and have to pass through difficult moments.
As we can have health problèmes or a dying mother or father. It’s life.
Will i open a thread on one of these situations : no. I don’t think the forum is a place to. Sorry to disagree on your lack of empathy jugment.

Noted, but entirely irrelevant to the point I made.

Not irrelevant, because as such threads shouldn’t exist, in my view, then empathy shouldn’t be necessary. It’s just our lives, personal lives, and we are mostly on an hifi forum.

“Community dot naimuidio dot com”. The clue’s in the URL, I’d have thought.

Why have a S1 or any pre amp?
Most top dacs have a very good volume control built in, so a pre isn’t really needed with just one source.

Clue= community ? Community = what we share= Naim gear= hifi and music = my view.

Sorry to disagree with your disagreement FR, always enjoy your input but this is an open forum where people discuss socks, cheese, birds, sometimes hifi and sometimes life. To be discussing the relative merits of £200k+ systems in this context is not in good taste or necessary. If you don’t like this type of thread you can choose to pass it by. Discuss those high end things in a dedicated thread and anyone can choose to read it as relevant to them or not. The OP was asking guidance on an impending potential financial hardship we might all wrestle with sometime and too many comments have ignored that, which in most people’s minds would be lacking in empathy. Perhaps not in Paris?

Sorry, but I even don’t understand the need for that question. If you have financial difficulties, a family, or any cash urgency in your life, it’s evident that our audio gear is secondary, so it’s obvious to downgrade or sell a part.
It happened to me during COVID time, and I had to sell my beloved SME 20/2a turntable.
Recently I had to sell my Phoenixnet.

But if the question is about « do I need to sell my gear because the future is not certain ? », my response is not. Life is short and it’s important to profit of it fully. We can die in 1 hour, we can be hurt by a car tomorrow, a meteorite can fall on our town tomorrow….but life is here and now.

The OP didn’t seem to me to be asking guidance, rather s/he was stating a path that currently seems to be a possible or maybe likely event as part of solving a financial situation. It was later clarified that there is a second system that would remain as a fallback, so not a matter of losing hifi entirely. It seemed that the putpose pf posting was perhaps partly seeking people’s observations, which might include suggestions though those weren’t requested, and partly perhaps clarifying thoughts in his/her own mind through the process of expressing here.

Whether any of the thread diversions including discussing ever pricier upgrades is distasteful or in some other way negative only @Stu299 can say.

Empathy is in short supply these days.

I had almost added that the OP may have also been seeking empathy, but people aren’t always when they post things like that (though they may be pleased to receive empathy).

I’m sure it’s the case that many of us have lavished countless hours and waking thoughts on developing our systems to whatever point they are at now. I imagine this is particularly the case for those of us fortunate to be at 500 series level. Some empathy for the predicament that might cause this emotional investment to have to be unwound is, it seems to me, the least anyone could expect.

This particular statement is worth repeating, so I did.

And most of the time they are miming to a pre recorded backing track.

Experiencing an ultra high end music system in your own home is a gift and a revelation. Being able to look back and say “how awesome was this, I am so glad I could do this at some point in my life” : It is a bit like flying into space for 15 min. Unforgettable. Nobody can take that experiece away….

After a bitter and very acrimonious divorce, I had to let everything go.

6 years on and now retired, and remarried, I have a system I have built around a s/h Naim Uniti Star. All of my equipment has been acquired on the ‘pre-loved’ market, and I couldn’t be happier.

There were many dark days (and nights) but the music kept me sane, even though it wasn’t being listened to on my expensive kit.

Remember, it’s always darkest just before the dawn…..

Stu, downsizing is an evolutionary process that need not necessarily mean less enjoyment.
It’s all about the practicality of funding your hobby that comes into focus that should not be any reason for remorse because adaptability will determine the outcome.

You can’t go wrong with Meindl (German) shoes (and boots).

Each pair always lasts a decade or much more, ime.
