Just out of interest….how many of us own a pair of these very limited edition speakers (only 55 pairs in the whole of the Uk!) on the platform? If you do, what do you think about them? Thanks. Seasons greetings btw
I’m no fan of Dynaudio speakers. Always felt the presentation was somehow disordered. Obviously then I’m not an owner. I have been lucky enough to hear them albeit more by accident than design. I was pleasantly surprised. First I have liked.
Bought mine from Acoustica after listening to them at the Acoustica Hifi weekend a month or so ago. They arrived 2-3 weeks ago (0124). Still running them in. Getting better and better. Beautiful speakers to look at, touch, feel and obviously most importantly to listen to. Using with a pair of REL C/Sp and have all 4 ports plugged as my listening room is quite compact. Their focus, imaging & soundstage is very good, that updated Esotar 3 tweeter is really excellent. Acoustica are/were demonstrating them and unless I am wrong they currently still have another pair for sale (I believe). Are they worth £10200? I certainly think so. Listening to Yes’s Awaken on vinyl as I write this. Really beautiful.
I was sorely tempted after listening to them at the same show, thought they sounded great.
But Pete only had two pairs ( and you bagged one ) so unable to home demo and my room is awkward and demands a home demo.
Not surprised that you are enjoying them. Thought they were lovely
I’ve heard (albeit briefly) a pair, on the end of a 552/500 system. I thought they sounded exceptional (in a good way). Gorgeous looks, too. I would love a pair…
I have the Heritage Specials ( smaller version) I might have bought the Contour Legacy but I’m thrilled with my little guys augmented with a pair of REL Classic 98’s
I also heard them at the Acoustica show… I even went as far as having a very long discussion with another dealer and almost, almost bought a pair… instead I bought a 500DR.
I too have a pair of Heritage Specials, which I’m really enjoying.
But I’m still tempted.
One of the reasons I decided not to pull the trigger on a pair is that I also have small listening room…
When I plugged the ports on the Heritage specials they sounded very odd. I’d like to know more about why you decided to plug yours… I assume you’re running them close to the wall.
Can you elaborate … I’m trying to understand what you mean by this.
I think you’re best to focus on comments from owners but I heard them at Acoustica but then also at the home of a new friend who has a collection of hi-if far beyond their needs. They’re the current speakers in his main system and they seemed very familiar last time I was round so I just assumed I’d heard them before. Two hours in and I got up to have a better look and realised I’d not heard them before and was very much enjoying the look and the sound.
To be clear, in my many previous encounters with Dynaudio I’ve found they unfailingly somehow cluttered the sound and seem to give prominence to the wrong element of the music. There was also a grain to the sound I found annoying. I hope that clarifies.
I too am the proud owner of a pair of Heritage Specials and use them with my nova. Great speakers. Will never part with these! When buying the contour legacies, Pete kindly offered me what I paid for them 3 years ago. (£5500!). I hope thé legacies will also retain (most of) their value……
Hi CatalystV12v. The rear of the speakers are 50cm from rear wall. I was reading that Dynaudio recommended at least this distance but have read on other sites that the minimal distance should be 1.5x diameter of port. That would obviously be closer. Anyway as I mentioned I use them with a pair of REL Carbon Specials. I initially used them fully open I.e. without the foam plugs, then experimented with plugging the lower ports then the upper ports and then both ports. To my ears, they sounded best when fully plugged. But as they have run in, I have removed all of the foam plugs again and they sound better again! The RELS provide the additional bass I need in my compact space. I liken my listening experience as like I am sitting inside a huge pair of headphones!! It’s quite addictive.
Interesting. I have a small listening space too. Room treatment has helped a lot to make it work well for me.
I’ve thought about subs but with the 500 I get far more bass than I used to.
I’ll have see how much money is in the piggy bank next year. If I could get a great trade in on the HS I might be tempted.
Thanks CatalystV12V. Sounds like a wonderful Hifi you have there. I have a 300Dr with 252. More than good enough for me. (At the moment ). Used with 2x6m epic xl to the Contours. (Allows me to sneak the Contours into the living room when I am home alone! They are sadly not allowed to stay there! (More than my life’s worth to argue……but the day will come perhaps when we have both fully retired, and that room transitions into my ´listening’ room).
I attach the RELS directly to the Contours beautiful speaker terminals via 10m REL Bassline blue cables . The RELS sit in the corners of my compact listening room and stay there even when the Contours are in the living room (2 rooms are connected by double doors which are fully open). The Contours fill that space with beautiful music too although it’s >2x the size.)
All in all, I can’t recommend these Contour Legacies highly enough. I think you would be making a wise choice should you decide to get one of the ever dwindling pairs available.
I’m hoping to move next year and I’m looking for a better music room setup.
Luckily I only have to please myself about where I listen, divorce has some upsides lol.
I’m a long-time Dynaudio owner and fan, currently running Special 25 behind a SN3/HCDR. I demoed Heritage Special extensively and never liked them. Mind you, they have some amazing qualities but as a package, they weren’t for me. Earlier this year I demoed Contour Legacy for several hours and was blown away. Comparing them to Confidence 30, I prefer Contour Legacy. The best speaker Dynaudio has ever made? Certainly one of them! I can’t recommend them high enough.
Hi GTaudiophile. Yes, the Legacies certainly are very, very special. I feel and am most fortunate. But I do with my HS too. Mine are 3+ years old and used regularly with my Nova. I adore them. I feel very fortunate to be able to own them too. They just hit the spot. Definitely lack bass but it’s still good for a bookshelf. Adding an S/510 has helped expand their tonality and soundstage just as John Hunter says.
Just out of interest, Mike (apologies for being a tad overfamiliar) what speakers do you have?
I have had some dynaudio S40s too (brilliant) which I part ex’d for the HS, but also have a pair of B&W 805D4 Signatures which are fantastic!!
How do you connect your sub to Heritage Specials?
Hi CatalystV12V. I connect the standard Neutrik speakon connection cable to the speaker terminals. Red to positive on right channel, yellow to positive on left channel and black to negative on left speaker.
I tried attaching them to the outputs on the nova and got an unacceptable hum, which does not occur by connecting directly to speakers.
