I originally bought the Dynaudio Emit 50 speakers and then decided to invest in the Naim NAIT XS3 amplifier and ND5 XS2 streamer to get the most out of the Emits. Now, I have electronics worth over three times the price of the speakers, which has me wondering if the Emit 50s are really up to the task.
The system sounds wonderful, but I can’t help but think about whether I’m truly maximizing the potential of the Naim setup with these speakers. I’m considering whether speakers that are easier to drive might be a better match.
I’d love to hear from others with experience on the Emit 50s. Has anyone compared them with other speakers, especially on similar setups? Any insights would be much appreciated.
I wouldn’t worry about the cumulative value of the electronics v the price of the speakers.
Dynaudio is one of the brands that has a big following on this forum . Everything seems to have a degree of balance , speakers at £1800 with an amplifier at £2500
There are two terms that you may come across , a mullet and a monkfish , one occurs when the speakers are way more expensive than partnering equipment, the other when the speakers are overly cheap .
If it was me I might have smaller but better quality stand mounts , but that is a personal opinion only.
I would say you have a nice balanced system (I have a ND5XS2 and Nait 50 ) and before I wanted to change speakers I would look at power cords and speaker cables . However I would be in no rush whatsoever to make changes
You nail it when you say the system sounds wonderful , as a Naim user of 30 plus years I can tell you your system can always be improved but that is the road to perdition and to use another cliche you will encounter the law of diminishing returns
The ND5XS2 and Nait XS3 is a really lovely combination. You mention the idea of speakers that are easy to drive, and looking at the specifications - 86db and 4 ohms, they are quite a handful. I sometimes wonder about the quality of a large multi driver speaker at a relatively modest price, and whether something smaller and simpler for the same price might actually be a better solution. But that’s just me; the important thing is that you say they sound wonderful. That could mean two things of course, that they actually do sound wonderful per se, or that it’s the best you’ve heard but you could do a lot better. The only way to find out is to have a listen to some alternatives, ideally at home. A lot depends on what’s available wherever you live.
Thank you for sharing your perspectives. At some point, I know I need to stop focusing so much on the system and just enjoy the music, or it’ll turn into a never-ending quest.
I realize that my judgment might be limited since I haven’t had the chance to listen to many different setups yet.
That’s why I’d appreciate your thoughts on the Emit 50 speakers—it’s hard for me to make an objective assessment on my own.
I’ve also heard some talk about the Arendal 1723 THX speakers; some people say they outperform many models at much higher price points. Has anyone here compared the Emit 50 to the 1723 THX or at least developed a strong impression of the Emit 50?
By the way, I’m looking for large tower speakers because my room is over 60 square meters, so I need something that can really fill the space.
I only know the smaller Emits, and I’ve never heared them in a room your size.
I’ve heared the xs3 and nd5xs2 combination a couple of times at my dealer with Kef loudspeakers and Focal loudspeakers - usually my dealer demos the Naim xs series with Focal Arias. I was very impressed by the sound and appreciated it more and many other speakers I’ve heared at my dealer, eg the here popular Kudos.
Focal Arias vs Dynaudio Emits is perhaps a more sideways move though. If you have a dealer, I would ask for some demo speakers to test since I understand that you’re impressed by the sound, but would like to have a more roomfilling sound.
Hi
I am currently auditioning a pair of emit 50s with naim nap 250 and nac 52 Olive. They sound amazing but I, like you am wondering if I can do better. Although they are an ex demo pair and £350 cheaper than retail price.
I’ve had a pair of kef r700s that have always been a bit too bright and the Dynaudios are very engaging but I’m so used to brightness I’m wondering if they lack detail.
I’ve been granted a few days of home use but at this price they seem too good to turn down.
I live in Suffolk and it’s a Hifi shop desert here so not a huge amount of choice.
Dynaudio makes speakers that goes better and better as you improve the amplification.
I think there was a review of a low range model by Stereophile magazine and the reviewer, for the fun, connected them to a multiple times price amplifier and he was stunned by the results.
You won’t lack details with Dynaudio, it’s just that their neutral nature can be “perturbing”.
BUT you will enjoy hours and hours of music without fatigue !
Duf, I think I know what you ment. Sure all speakers shows it’s best with better amps but at some point you get to the wall and there is no significant improvment no matter what you plug. Every (not high end) speaker has it’s limit but my personal feeling is Dyns simply has the wall efect a bit further. In other words they like pricy comanions
I have the Evoke 30’s with a Star cd/streamer and very happy with the combo. (If you already like the sound profile maybe upgrading to Evoke 30 or 50’s might be worth looking at?
