I think I am right. NSS 333 into stream NN50. Rega3 into phono. Uniti 1 into aux (for CD). Set NSS to default earth and make Uniti floating (non default) earth. Any thoughts as thought better to use earth on newer device.
As long as only one of your sources provides the earth connection youāre fine. I canāt imagine it would matter which of your two Naim sources does this, but you are, of course, free to experiment!
Thanks I thought as much. Just some say only one earth and some say doesnāt matter.
Sounds about right, but not sure about the P3 and NSS?
afaik the P3 earthing thru RCA phono cable. You may check if the SQ of turntable degrades.
On some systems Iāve owned there has been no audible difference between ground settings on the Naim source. Thereās no harm in trying out different settings to see if one sounds better than the other.
If the turntable provides a suitable ground you may even want to lift the connection on both Naim streamers, but I donāt know how the grounding works on Rega equipment.
Correct. It was really if only one Naim earth should be used as that seemed to vary. Thanks I just have a low level hum in new (old) house which means I am faffing about trying things such as unplugging fridgesā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..which is getting me odd looks at home.
Sounds like the P3 crashes with NSS. You may try to set the NSS to āfloatingā and see if the hum goes.
Experimenting this afternoon. Uniti floating with 333 default seems to have reduced the issue. I will continue to experiment. Thank you
No earth with my P3 into a NN50.
The Rega stuff does use wall wart power supplies but Iāve not had an issue previously so unlikely to be those feeding back into the mains.
All of these hang off the same power outlet yeah?
All to Titan Ares block . However hum much reduced now with 333 as earth and Uniti floating. Even on phono which as expected had loudest hum.
Just asked Gemini for your situation, you are right the 333 is typically the signal 0V within modern Naim system, and Uniti 1 should be floating.
And if you donāt mind I posting Geminiās answer here (it solves all my signal earthing problem indeed):
The Rega P3 (Analog Grounding)
Rega turntables handle grounding differently than most. The P3 does not have a separate ground wire; instead, the tonearm ground is internally linked to the outer shield of the left-channel RCA plug.
Conflict Resolution:
Because the Regaās ground is tied to the signal return rather than the mains earth, it usually doesnāt conflict with the Naim āsingle pointā rule. However, if you hear a persistent hum when the turntable is selected, ensure the turntable is not sitting directly on top of a power supply (like the Unitiās transformer), as the Rega motor and wiring are sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
So in summary the tonearm cable is very sensitive to interference you may have a second look on this.
Hmm that is slightly misleading as written⦠often an issue with public LLM AI systems using web sources. The Naim unbalanced signal Earth control is all about avoiding Earth loops along with avoiding lossy signal returns for optimum audio signal performance.
Simply put the Rega system is considered āfloatingā in Naim grounding speak using the info you have copied.
However in many circles itās considered bad practice to combine system ground with very small signal returns as your AI system says Rega does, as induced common mode noise can capacitively couple into the signal return and cause a faint hum with some setups especially with very low signal levels from MC cartridges etc. Usually better to provide a decoupled low impedance path to earth seperate from signal return for optimum low noise performance.
This is why n some phono preamps you will see a seperate grounding tab for exactly this purpose.
All power on bottom shelf on 4 shelf iso blue. Rega PS bottom right next to NN 50. Uniti next shelf up. NSS 333 above that then empty double space shelf with Rega on top. Optimum from my reading here with power cables to right into block to right.
Cheers Simon, great to learn about that. And maybe thatās why, I couldnāt eliminate that tiny hum when I had my P3 with full Rega chain.
Thank you. Would add Rega has floating earth wire ( yes that old) which clearly is not been used as touches wood shelf. Some have said best attach to metalwork on underside TT but I have not done that (yet) as assume earth is RCA via tone arm and wiring re done when upgraded to 24v motor. Dealer experienced so I assumed they left earth wire as not used ?
Should add MM cart
Your hifi dealer should know what is what of course, but I would be tempted to add the earth/ground lead from your turntable to your Earth post on your preamp⦠certainly if the turntable is not chassis earthed via the mains plug⦠if the signal return is entirely separate from the chassis ground from a DC perspective there should be no induced earth loop hum.
fwiw Iāve got Naim cd player, streamer and LP12 as source, kills hum and sound best in this way:
cd player being the earthing point, and streamer set to āfloatingā. Tonearm cable of my previous Ittok got earthing wires at both end. So the one near the preamp isnāt connect and wrapped with plastic tape. The one right that under the tonearm, is connected to the sub-chassis/psu earthing.
SQ of both cd player and the deck are retained in this way. And then found out the mini refrigerator in the room is the source of hum.
Will try that. The NN50 has an earth point if I recall correctly
Your setup sounds correct, however an appliance should never be the source of hum unless itās causing EMI or RFI (which shouldnāt be confused with ground loop induced current⦠ie normal hum), which means the appliance is faulty or non compliant, your mains wiring is faulty (possibly fault in earthing) or your low signal shielding on your turntable cartridge and arm is not optimally set or indeed faulty.
