End Of An Era

So sad to see a post on the forum about Naim’s final departure from FM radio.

“For those who maybe interested - it is with a heavy heart, I inform you that the iconic Galaxie 23 aerials (x4) were, on the 20th of Jan, removed from Naim HQ.”

Sad as it underscores the slow decline of FM as a radio broadcasting medium and move to the zillions of internet stations from over the world, available at the touch of a phone or iPad screen … and other services present and I’m sure yet to come.

Thanks Naim for your outstanding contribution to FM reception, sadly I’ve never owned a NAT-01, so can only dream, sweet dreams.

The irony then of so many listeners’ difficulties with internet radio over the last few days…

I should add - much smaller DAB, TV & FM aerials have been fitted as replacements.
So it’s not the end of FM, just a downsize!

Neil.

Suitable receiver then…?

Prior to the 2012 DSO, you would get a pretty good picture from that here in Salisbury on the telescopic aerial!

Neil.

I have opened the original thread now. I don’t appear to be able to merge though @Richard.Dane

Love that logo neil (deliberate lower case n)

Sad to hear Neil, but understandable as they have deteriorated and become potentially dangerous. I think best keep the old thread (might be too long now merge anyway) and have this one stand alone.

I have always thought of radio as an important source, and have had a Magnum Dynalab as well as a NAT03, but the quality of HD BBC R3 has meant that I am now happy to stream.

I think I will move before the wrath of many users descends on me,

When I traded in my NAT 03 I get an amount for it, but noticed it sold very quickly with the firm that bought it

FM still has its place - at our static caravan for example where DAB is not covered very well and for streaming we would rely on the 4G hotspot which also has “off” moments.

Incidentally, it seems that vtuner is offline again so no streaming if you have an older device

The internet is so poor here (regular drop outs) that internet radio is essentially unusable, so FM is still very much used with a variety of FM tuners used around the house, including my NAT03 in the main Naim system.

I have often used 0103 and 0106 for Radio 3 and Classic FM on my Sky Box , not as good as top quality Fm or Internet Radio but very good. (I find Classic FM is much better of an evening)

Working in the City , many front desks are manned 24/7 and that type of device was widely seen -though not in daytime hours

Yup, bummer, no RP this morning, although we have it playing on the kitchen Sonos ‘Alexa’.

I hope Naim will have good news on Monday.
Do we still get vTuner back and/or when will we get the launch of the new Naim Internet Radio for 1st Gen (Green Screen) units

In my OP I did lament the slow decline of FM, but it’ll be around for quite a few more years (provided the loony politicians don’t get involved).
My NAT-05 is my most used music source and something that I’ll never sell as long as FM is alive and well.

Yeah, likewise - despite being able to stream on the NDX, the Innuos, the Wiim and two Mu-sos, I still use my NAT-02 more than any other source. There’s something beautiful about FM that is missing on digital, even on BBC Radio 3 HD streaming. Long may it continue…

I’ve seen you mention this many times in the past. I have often wondered how you have been able to do your (rather admirable) job as moderator.

I have a 4g dongle that fills in the gaps - sometimes. It doesn’t always as it can depend on atmospherics. There are some days I get no 4g signal.

Luckily though on the most recent visit by an engineer to try to to find the root cause, I persuaded him to leave his “sniffer” on while he went away on another job. When he came back he saw there was a possible issue 30 metres away, which just so happened to be the exact distance to the first telegraph pole. I had told him that things had greatly improved some years back when a particularly diligent engineer had spent the day going along the line for half a mile cleaning up all the junctions (there are many because of tree falls). So he went out and cleaned up the connections on the pole, and since then service has improved markedly. But of course, it won’t last… :frowning:
