It’s hardly polluting if done right. I like to get the most out of my system so if it can do music and also enhance the viewing experience then that works for me.

Perhaps my views are not accurate here. But personally I prefer to separate.
I do as many others do and connect my TV to the digital input of my 272 with an optical lead. It makes no impact whatsoever in the performance of the system but makes the telly sound a lot better than the sound bar I previously used.
The OP has already made clear that there is no room for an AV2, but in my case many issues were solved when I squeezed in a AV2 between my telly and the Nait5. No more ground loops, suddenly good sound crispy and clear sound, a joy to listen to, especially on music videos. I use an electric connection, no optical. The electric connection is faster than the optical connection for some reason.
You (understandably) may not have read it Richard but yes already done over the weekend and it’s clearly a contributory factor as CD definitely improved with TV out. Don’t think it’s the whole issue as both TV and music are sibilant in places; lacking smoothness at the top end and still lacking mids albeit CD more than TV.
Sky box back in after family protests but moved to Aux1 and the TV sound is better (which perhaps indicates a 202 issue) but won’t have a chance to go back and listen to CD with the TV back in until later tonight or tomorrow evening
Those of you who say optical to DAC to analogue… I am with you all the way and will be exploring options ASAP.
@Ardbeg10y what do you mean by electrical as opposed to optical please?
Coax spdif instead of optical spdif.
An optical connection is normally perfectly sufficient for the relatively limited quality of the TV sound (the limitations are caused by the data compression).
I’m another 272 user with TV sound through a long (10m) optical fibre.)
Hi Xanthe, could you explain in what way data is compressed when sent over Toslink? Or do you mean that the PCM output from the TV is already compressed?
She means that TV sound is compressed, which is immediately obvious when pointed out!
My fibre optic between TV and 272 is 10m long too.

Just asking here: regarding the DAC connections to the Naim, is it better to use long Toslink and short Phono to Din (to the NAC62 in my case) or short quality (Chord brand) Toslink and long Phono to Din?
I appreciate the requirement to keep the TV electrically isolated from the Naim inputs.
Another thought here: is if it is preferable to keep any switch mode psu units off the HiFi mains supply circuit (dedicated spur) to keep the noise of switch mode psu’s off the mains circuit feeding the Naim system?
Thanks
Assuming we’re talking about the lavender grey cable, or something similar, I would always try to keep any analogue i/cs within the Naim system to somewhere around the standard length of 1.25m.
Two things…
First there is analogue signal compression (to reduce dynamic range)
Second, the audio data are subject to lossy compression before transmission (for instance MP3 compression for MPEG 2 streams); the data are then expanded again to a LPCM stream for transmission by S/Pdif (optical or coax).
In my case, something similar but not too expensive abd then need to learn my way around what’s available in terms of cheap DACs which take an optical cable. As far as I can see the cheap ones are all USB?
The Schiit Modi 3 is £120 (UK site) or $99 (US/global) and supports USB, SPDIF, and Toslink(optical). These are made in the US.
Plenty of reviews of Schiit stuff online, especially from John Darko.
PS. I use Toslink from my LG TV over Audioquest Carbon into my Chord TT2 DAC - works a treat with a 2-channel PCM setting.
Good luck Mike !
There are plenty of cheap optical DACs - try Richer Sounds, or for really cheap, try Amazon or fleabay.
Hi Mike,
I used a Cambridge Audio DACMAGIC 100 for a number of years. TV out via optical toslink to the dacmagic, then RCA to DIN from the dacmagic to the NAC52. Worked a treat until we bought the posh dac (Chord DAVE + M Scaler) which made it redundant.
The DACMAGIC 100 is about £170 new, or £75 on the well known auction site. The optical toslink cable cost at least £4.
Best regards, BF
I’ve got the Blu-ray, Virgin box, Router and other bits on the same socket circuit as the rest of the room but the Naim 2 channel and AV units units are all on a dedicated set of sockets. I’ve had to trail an extension lead from between the 2 channel & AV as they’re a good 5m apart. Not had any ground loop problems.
HTH.
Thanks. Having read all the suggestions it strikes me that a Schitt Modi 3 using optical fits the bill (if I can find another power socket). A short run of lavender seems OTT but there’s lots of options for alternatives.
So, it’s on my to do list putting aside that no dealers local to me seem to sell them so I may have to go direct.
In the meantime back to CD sound and tonight I’ll see what I think has happened to that since the Sky box was reattached to Aux1.
Mike,
This thread is better than a mystery book or film ! With a bit of “Thriller” thrown in - eg will the hero persevere and succeed?
I could probably put aside Wuthering Heights or The Woman in White !
Glad we’re entertaining you @Don
Fine proof of how great the forum is and how threads which wander can serve many purposes. Got a gig Friday and then I’m away for the weekend but next week looks very positive for looking at the speaker cables and doing some box swapping to further narrow things down.
