End of my tether

Sorry, I was being lazy and saving typing! If you are setting the Zenith to do something after 10 or whatever changes it sounds rather as though the USB might have to stay connected. Otherwise, what does it do if you set it for 10 changes and it gets to 11? You don’t want to have to count! I just plug my USB in when I feel like it, press a little button, the Qnap works out what’s needed and does it.

I can recall @Morton using this drive and I’m happy to take a punt as Innuos don’t have a recommendation and if it’s like everything else they do then it just works.

@anon4489532 I think it’s sufficiently capable of doing a quick check each time it’s plugged back in in order to see if there have been 10 or 50 changes.

It’s no biggie. It’s just that the USB cable which comes with it is short and that would leave it sat on the Innuos or the 202. I’ll be damned if I can find any literature saying what the specific USB connections are with the cable so I can’t buy a longer one until it’s here and I can see it for myself.

The most important thing is to have a secure backup. The Zenith should, as you say, be clever enough to work it out.

Yes, you are right, in fact I have two WD Elements 2TB drives as backups, one of which I keep at by brothers house for safe keeping. I swap them occasionally.
I back up to the drive when I think fit, it only takes a couple of minutes, I don’t leave it plugged all the time.

Definitely DO NOT leave it plugged in.
Plug it in for updates, only when new music has been added, then unplug it and leave it in a safe place, preferably outside your house such as a detached garage or family/friends/neighbours.
In the event of a major loss (theft, fire, flood etc) your digital music collection will still be safe.

Yes, in a safe deposit box in your bank, with a guard behind it 24/24 :joy:

192/24, Surely?

I meant 24h / 24. With a physical guard and maybe 2 dogs also…

If you have a nas or drive on your network it will happily back up to that which gives some separation and negates having to buy a hard drive

I had thought you had meant 24/7 and simply mis-typed.

Now I’m unsure what you mean with 24h / 24.

Thanks but it’s an option I’m specifically avoiding. An external hard drive or two is just fine. What I may explore at some point is high resolution album downloads which either get located on a network share or a USB stick for import to the Zenith.

24 hours / 24 hours. At least in France we write that to point that it’s continuously.

Ah…ok…we say 24/7 …24 hrs a day 7 days a week.
My comment was a bit of a joke…referencing file quality.

As already noted, here in the UK, and I believe N. America but others will soon correct that if it’s wrong, we use 24/7 signifying 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when a service or facility is constantly or always available.

Interesting that you use 24h/24. We learn something new every day.

Where do you go after weeks…?

The ssd are going to spa holidays, for a cryo treatment.

WD backup drive arriving tomorrow morning. Not ripped much today. Stopped at just over 300 and will backup tomorrow then continue.

Edging towards storing just the CDs in flight cases with the booklets and boxed sets staying in the house for display and perusal as desired.

The sensitivity of my speakers means that things are detailed at low volume but lack body. Whole thing only comes together at a relatively high volume. Going to spend the next few days ripping; backing up and also reading the online manual for the DAC. Especially wondering how @Simon-in-Suffolk suggestion re: high gain mode might impact the above?

Hi… given my fairly recent experiences and what you describe, I would check speaker and amp matching… is your amp powerful enough/matched for your speakers.
I found, perhaps paradoxically, at low volume this really shows… and amp that is underpowered seems to lack body and depth at low volumes … especially with bass… use a more powerful amp and at low volume (ie less than speaking volume) it still sounds full body… albeit you can’t feel the sound you van at higher volume.

Cheers
Just purchased one that holds 320 cd’s. If it’s any good I’ll probably go for another.
