English Electric 8Switch

Jim… you will almost certainly have only one router… ie the device that routes between your home network and the internet. The router will have switchports… usually four.
The router is unlikely to spread electromagnetic noise.
There may be some capacitively coupled high frequency common mode currents that pass to or from the router switchports from other devices… it depends on which has the lowest impedance to ground.

That’s the type of noise I am trying to avoid by only plugging in 2 ethernet cables into my router (rather than 4).

Simples!

But you don’t know if it’s passing to or from the router?
The common mode current flows in a direction… it could be coming from your connected switch

Goodie, mine English Electric 8Switch should arrive late this week (maybe Monday).

My EE8Switch arrived today, just about to setup however I have grandkids (and their parents) here for a week. It’ll probably be next weekend before I get a chance to have a good listen and see what the fuss is about.

I installed my brand new EE 8Switch this morning after all the discussion on this thread and others it seemed I just had to have one. Set up was easy even I could do it, replaced the cheap D-Link that’s connected to both my UST2 and my 272. My network is hardwired and runs cat E5 (I think).

To be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect, while I do believe some of these tweaks work I generally feel it’s all on the margins. It may sound different but is it better and how much better. Guess it’s time to find out.

Started with a Tidal stream in CD quality of Matt Berninger’s excellent Serpent Prison. Straight out of the box it sounded louder, there was detail in the keyboards that I hadn’t noticed before and it certainly sounded less digital.

Next David Bowie’s ChangesNowBowie album in CD format (HDTracks) from my US, this is a live rehearsal from 95. Excellent sound even before the upgrade. Listening to Shopping For Girls, Bowie voice always sounded menacing more so now and the band sounds tighter, more swing.

Only got a chance to listen to those 2 tracks this morning and as I mentioned before I won’t get much of a chance to listen much for a few days.

You know I really wasn’t expecting much but so far it’s impressive. I’ll go and eat my hat now, cheers.

Yes, I did.
Thought it was a bad joke. given the current situation that we are all in.

I’ll delete my post as well, just thought I was going mad.

It was a good point but my grandkids wear me out and I’m usually in bed at the same time as them.

Agreed but with different music. There’s something going on there but at at least it’s nicely screwed together and tiny.

It does feel solid but I’m not sure how well it’s put together. The rubber rings (feet) fell off when I pulled it out of the box.

Same here

Same here. The original EE 8switch I received, I returned for one of the ‘O’ ring feet being detached upon receipt. The replacement was okay on arrival. However, over time, with use, one of the ‘O’ rings has detached itself when moving the switch. I therefore would suggest that Chord have a quality control problem in China, if this problem with the EE 8switch is still ongoing.

I had to wait too long to send it back. Just slipped them back on hopefully they’ll stay there.

Not hard to rectify, with another type of adhesive. You could even replace the ‘O’ rings with some other form of decoupling. However, I have had my switch for 8 months now and this quality control failure has still not been addressed by Chord.

All four of mine detached soon and did not want to stick, would come off again after slightest movement during setup, so I glued them on after I had dived into the black insides of my sideboard to find four tiny black rings one too many times. (There was glue residue visible in the metal feet anyways)

I’ve had no issues with O rings. Mind you, while I was growing up my father did warn me never to fiddle with my O rings…

OK here thank fully.

Hi Morning all,

I have just purchased the English Electric switch, just waiting for it to arrive now and hopefully by the weekend.

I currently have a Cisco 2960 switch installed and the EE switch will replace this. Have any of you that have done this change left the Cisco installed, perhaps next to the router and the EE switch at the Hi Fi end or removed Cisco completely out of the chain. Thanks.

Lots of posts about this further up in this thread, just search for Cisco within the thread. In short, people tried both, it seems on average that if you don’t have a need to filter multicast traffic it is preferred to use the EE alone
