English Premier or International (HiFi) - reminder of the Tournament

Hi All,

My first new thread creation, so treat me gently please.

Does anyone use football analogies when trying to explain to non HiFi friends what you have been doing (when on demo) or why we spend so much time (and occasionally money) on our hobby?

In my observation the forum seems focussed on the English (premier) league. I mean we spend a lot of time attending matches between ‘this’ Naim product or ‘that’ Naim product? However I note a few (eg Dunc and others) attend European matches.

In my own case, last year I was lucky enough to grab tickets to two International Semis and then Final between a final four of England (Naim), Scotland (Linn), Canada (EMM Labs) and USA (ATI).

Anyway, the last time I was at such an International final, it was four years ago, England (Naim 500 series) and Germany (T+A). Sorry - I don’t have pics. The trophy result was too expensive for me to take home……….but I guess you might be wondering what was the result……………?

“Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over…………”

All the best to any football and Naim fans.

Ok, looks like my thread didn’t quite land where I expected.

Does anybody know what happened in an important international football tournament in 1966?

What does that mean for amplifier selection in my jokey thread analogy?

Hi All,

Does anybody look at specifications of equipment, before selecting components for listening trials?

I guess since this is a Naim forum, those stats are hard to find, other than size weight and power of Naim amplifiers, for example.

Normally, I don’t do trials without studying the pre match stats. Example shown below for the International tournament pic in the original posting.

Anyway, I find it slightly irritating that Naim don’t publish more of the specifications of their excellent equipment. Does anybody here have a view as to why that might be?

What other stats do you need?
Surely you just listen to it and decide?

The six missing ones, indicated by the ? In the chart for the Naim amp.

Those six, get you into the listening test. After which there is the decision.

In the above case, I had to include the Naim amp on trust, and even though it very heavy and expensive, occupying a slot which might have been filled by one of the other potential competitors.

I’m from Essex but I’m still not clear on what your saying.

Which part in the original posting caused you the most confusion?

Oh, you mean an over-inflated sense of achievement and subsequent entitlement was born.

Still struggling to make any connection here.

I see no parallels between football and hifi.
And I’ve never seen the attraction of watching people kick a ball around.

Football doesn’t exist in my world and hasn’t since there were still four devision in the professional league.

I know the analogy is meant to be jokey but I could use a car vs hifi analogy instead to illustrate my hifi “hobby”:

I love driving but I don’t care much for test driving. That’s something that I only do about once every 5 years when renewing my car.

I love listening to music but I don’t care much for demos. That’s something that I only do about once every 5 years when upgrading my hifi.

I watch football every week, including going to the matches in person whenever possible.

However, I have never felt the need to make any analogies to justify any of my hobbies.
