EVs, Cooking Tips, Kettles and Quooker

Anyone had one installed?

I’ve had a Franke 4 in 1 tap for a few years. Similar product.

Hot/cold/boiling/ filtered.

Friend of mine has a Quooker and v good it is too. It genuinely produces boiling water. My friend claims that Quooker is the only one that does produce boiling water but I have no idea if that is true

My daughter acquired one already installed when she moved house. But she became aware of how often she could hear it heating the small reserve of boiling water and how infrequently she needed instant boiling water, so she turned the power to it off and it remains off five years later.

Yes. Had one for years. Instant hot water is very convenient.

We have a Blanco version, but same thing. Hot, Cold, Boiling.
Boiling most definitely is “Boiling”!
Don’t even own a kettle anymore.

Fitted loads.
A few do boiling but most cheaper ones do about 98 degrees max.
The quooker do after a while slowly reduce it’s temperature and i have seen a few in the high 80’s before they finally stop working.
If you have many hot drinks throughout the day and night then worth having, but if its just one or two in the morning then out all day and then a few at night. Well this then becomes an expensive way to do it.
Better to have a kettle that does a cup at a time.
Plus parts are expensive for them and only quooker will fix / repair them as they wont sell the parts.

Thanks guys.

This was exactly the conclusion come to by a consumer programme on Radio 4 recently on this very subject. Economically speaking, it only really makes sense if you need to produce hot drinks on the scale of a busy cafe every day.

Of course, if convenience alone is your aim and you’re prepared to pay for it, that’s a different matter, though the environmental cost in the current - ahem - climate shouldn’t be ignored.

It seems so much more sensible just to bought you need in a kettle when you need it. Talk thin kettles can boil just enough for one cup if needed. Keeping a reserve of water at boiling point just seems wrong.

Yes, had a Quooker for last 7 years and can’t fault it at all. My parents have had one for well over decade as well. I have the limescale filter and cold water filter fitted alongside the tank under the sink.
It’s definitely boiling when it comes out of the tap and is really helpful for pre cleaning pans etc.

Highly recommended.

My understanding / experience is that they are very efficient and the tank is cool to the touch so there’s virtually no heatloss. One huge bonus is the saving of worktop space and having filtered cold / boiling water coming out of one tap.

If you think it will get plenty of daily use then I’d say it’s worthwhile, if you just need it for a morning cup of coffee then probably not.

My daughter has one, branded Insinkerator. The water isn’t boiling, and certainly not hot enough to make tea. It’s OK for filling pans to bring them to boil more quickly on the gas hob, but that’s about all.
To be fair it’s of unknown age and probably needs a service. It also has a very slow leak onto the worktop.
Given the need for a moderately large box under the sink which includes a water tank that’s kept permanently hot, personally I wouldn’t bother.

My neighbours have a different (can’t remember ) brand boiling tap which is a waste of time, it’s nowhere near boiling and constantly failing. Boiling taps are like most other things on this forum in that you get what you pay for.

I shared most of the concerns and opinions here prior to purchase but my experience is definitely on the positive side.

Worth a listen, Lindsay.

Thanks James.

I considered one (brand irrelevant) when I fitted my present kitchen, also when doing my sister-un-law’s a couple of years ago, reasons for not were concern over whether truly boiling, ongoing cost for amount of water boiled vs by electric kettle or f cooking vs pan on induction hob, and also safety concerns with children once big enough to reach back of worksurface. @Dunc’s note re deterioration over time confirms not doing was the correct choice in each case,

I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if you put a decent thermometer in the water straight out the boiling tap most won’t be boiling.
Even the quooker ones lose it, but they are certainly one off the better ones.
It looks boiling when it’s spurting out the spout but looks can be deceiving.
Most people only realise once it’s broken and have to boil water in a pan as no kettle.
They usually burn their mouth the first time.

the programme was sliced bread and it concluded that the critical number of hot drinks per day was 10 as far as I can recall.
The Quooker holds the water at above 100C as it is a pressurised unit. It is also very efficient high temp storage unit.
I am about to fit one - if there is anything you want to know.

After doing the research we’ve gone for a Qettle 4 in 1 .. so far so good, plenty of boiling water and much cheaper than the Qooker!
