Absolutely: Max put his car in front of an out of control car that he couldn’t possibly have seen coming; what did he expect to happen!

Exactly

I thought the Austrian Grand Prix was pretty decent. Shame that MV was taken out so early in the race - I suspect Red Bull was well below par at their home circuit, but you never know with Max what he might be able to pull out of the bag. George Russell was cooked from the off - quite a nightmare following the false dawn of the last race. The Ferrari’s were doddling around in the middle ground of nothingness and I rather imagine Lewis Hamilton was not at all chuffed with his race engineer (again). The mannerisms over the radio comms was very strange and a million miles away from his previous experience at Mercedes. Whilst there was quite a ding dong battle going on further back in the pack, it was the competition between Oscar and Lando which fascinated me. Hats off to Oscar - he threw everything at it right up until near the end when it looked like his tyres were cooked. He imposed a pressure cooker atmosphere on Lando who managed to hold it together for the entire race and, following his terrible wobbles last race weekend, will hopefully emerge stronger and more stable for Silverstone. McLaren really are letting their drivers get on with it - Ferrari please take note!

Nice article ahead of next weekend.

When I went to the British Grandprix and camped for the weekend in the 70s/80s I preferred Brands hatch as a venue. I enjoyed the different view points you could get from the start/finish and the view of what looked like a mini-circuit and then the very fast main strait from Druids to Graham Hill bend. The cars sounded fantastic. I went a few times as a corporate guest and host in the 1990s at Silverstone but not quite the same but enjoyed seeing Damon Hill win. I also was there when Schumacher went straight on at the end of hanger and missing Stowe corner.

I am looking forward to seeing this years race at Silverstone on TV.

Coolish and murky Saturday and Sunday. That suits Merc again. Perhaps they will be the McLaren challengers this weekend?

Yes cool grey and hints of damp around these parts over the weekend

I had a chuckle at a local BBC web news report this morning. It praised F1 for its contribution to technology and employment in the Oxford area (F1’s Motorsport Valley is centred around Oxfordshire and Northants/Bucks in UK)
The lead photo is a McLaren, made in Woking, Surrey.
Bless’em

A first at the British GP today.

So where is the real trophy?

Bummer for Max. But great for Hulky.

I can’t help thinking that, perhaps, Canada was the kick up the backside that Lando needed & will now produce a real fight for the championship.

I also think that Oscar was trying to get Max penalised for overtaking under the safety car, braked far too much & could have caused an accident, hence the penalty.

Well done Lando &, especially, Nico!

Crumbs that was quite a race!

Red Bull and Max’s gamble of having a low downforce setup that gave them an advantage in qualifying was neutralised at best by the wet and mixed weather. At worst, it caused him to spin at the restart later on and made the car very difficult to drive. If it had been a dry race it could have been a different outcome.

I think Piastri has reason to feel robbed but he was chancing his arm by asking the team to swap the drivers after the last pitstop. The team did not swap them the Stewards did with the 10 second penalty nor was it anything to do with Norris. So Norris did not deserve to be penalised instead.

The penalty seems harsh for Piastri but he certainly slowed hard at the point the safety car was going to come in. Perhaps it was a mistake or a tactic to wrong foot Max or get him a penalty for overtaking the leader under safety car conditions. I suppose the stewards were thinking the later and with the low visibility creating the potential danger of collisions down the bunched up field.

So, well done to Hulkenberg, 19th to 3rd shows what a mixed up race it was and of course well done to Norris for winning his home Grand Prix.

An entertaining race.

Arguably a harsh penalty for Oscar, but he accelerated before braking after the safety car lights went out, hence the penalty. The debate for me is about whether 5 seconds would have been more appropriate.

For me, though, Hulk getting his first podium was the highlight.

The got both on the podium and get to keep the Lego version.

Note that in the calm-down room, Hulk said he nearly ploughed into the back of Lando when Oscar slowed unexpectedly suddenly.

Interesting. Jos will be grinning.
