I have just looked into this.. specifically from the UK to the EU, but feels like it should be the same the other way…
VAT and duties are waived if the shipment is clearly labelled using a commercial declaration form declaring goods are for repair and also as a ‘temporary export’ and will be shipped back after the repair. Naim almost certainly know how to handle the return documentation for the return leg to avoid duties..
If in warranty you are not liable on service or repair VAT costs, if out of warranty you are liable for repair costs and the VAT associated with the repair.
Hi. I did think about the N50. Seems like there are still new ones available in Portugal. The inputs into the N50 are limited. Currently have RCA interconnects between DAC and the 252. I think different cables required for N50??
Thanks Simon. Initial response from the dealer in Lisbon outlined that only shipping costs would be involved with sending back to the UK. However I am still waiting for a detailed response.
They will be arranging for (or may ask you to arrange) a boomerang carnet which allows almost olany item of value not for sale to go in and out of country within 90 days charge free.
It’s the same paperwork used to ship gear around for hifi shows from country to country. You can do it on line if the dealer won’t handle it.
Just pray a stupid courier doesn’t do something daft with do document pouch. I sent an amp to Naim some years back. All the paperwork prepared in triplicate. When the box arrived in the UK the document pouch was simply missing. I had to just pay up to get it released. It’s a rare problem but not as rare as it should be.
yes my most recent Naim amp repair took about four weeks, but that included a return back to Naim after an incorrect NFF status. Jason apparently got involved second time around and it got fixed.
Your repair sounds more obvious so unlikely to experience this.
Hi Richard. I have had the 252/300 switched off for a week solid now. The previous week I tried a few tests, swapping cables etc and noise from one speaker continued. Noise swapped from one speaker to the other when I swapped speaker cables at the power amp.
This afternoon before packing the units to take to a Naim dealer for repair/service I switched everything on. Blow me, the system has worked fine for three hours and counting. Is this intermittent fault common?
I intend to continue with taking the units to the dealer tomorrow - do you agree with this course of action? Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Brian, without knowing the fault, I don’t know - it could be anything, but at least you have narrowed it down to the electronics. I think enlisting the help of your dealer is a great idea.
Thanks Richard. I agree that getting it to the dealer is the best option at the moment. I will play the system for a few more hours at higher volumes than I normally do, to see if this will stress any weaker component.
Mrs B is looking forward to the trip to the dealer in Seville tomorrow so all good.
@Fredd , thanks for your input. I would have thought it unlikely that the speaker/amp interplay would have caused the issue as they have been together in the system for almost 10 years. However I really don’t know.
In the area where we live we had a number of main power outages followed by rapid in/off sequences during the first years. Most winters we will get unannounced power cuts (normally after heavy rain) again leading to a number of on:off cycles. During any heavy rain periods and power outages (if I am at home) I will isolate the system to help protect.. A couple of years back the builder was finishing off work to the outside of the house (long story about gaining the right council permits to allow him to complete as per contract) again resulting in a number of power surges/outages. Also a lot of dust being generated. None of this will have helped.
It will be interesting to get the feedback from the techs on what the issue is and even better if they can identify a cause.
