Favourite Mondegreen

As a child of 8 I saw an Elvis movie at the cinema. He sang a song which sounded like “Return December”. It was a sentiment that I heartily agreed with at the time , as I loved Christmas. It took be another five years or so to be disabused of this notion when I figured out the lyrics actually were“ Return to sender”-boring! Has anyone else got any examples?

In the song ‘Joy to the World (Three Dog Night song),’ which does not rate as a favourite, as I child I always heard “Jeremiah was a bulldog.”

Years later, following a request from one of the kids to play it in the car, I was singing along with unbridled enthusiasm and my wife killed herself laughing. It turns out Jeremiah is in fact a bullfrog.

Given the choice, if I was Jeremiah, I’d rather be a bulldog. So there.
