Financial thread

Funny how unrelated things crop up but I once went to a wine society tasting with a colleague from Oxford, I honestly don’t know why I never joined.

Back when the BoE was the market regulator, I worked with a member of their staff who was on secondment. It was an open secret about certain ‘wrong’uns’ in the financial world (the Polly Peck scandal had ocurred several years before), but knowing it and proving it were very different things. One suspects this remains true today – although from reading some of the commentary around the Report, it seems the issue is equally, if not moreso, around culture.

There again, some of the shortcomings pinned on the FCA surround ‘unregulated’ products, and the words ‘a fool and their money are soon parted’ spring to mind.

We used to be in The Wine Society, over thirty years ago.

Oh. The wine society.

I’ve been misreading that, I thought they were talking about the Whine Society. :joy:

I can but agree, The Wine Society is absolutely first class.

Did the same - thanks @HungryHalibut

Gosh, it’s funny how things work out, and how things people post can trigger others to investigate. I’ve found lots of things from people’s posts, and it’s usually the off topic things that people drop into the conversation that are the most interesting.

We have 18 bottles from the Wine Society arriving in the next hour or two.

Shop early for Christmas!

We’re picking ours up tomorrow from D Byrne wine merchant in Clitheroe.

I was going to say ‘tonight’!

Love Byrne’s :grinning::grinning:

I ordered a “mixed box” of wines from the WS a couple of weeks ago and it was due to be delivered a few days later. Cutting a long story short, DHL delivered it to a random address about half a mile away and after a struggle with DHL’s chat system, I did eventually speak to a real person who told me where it had been delivered.

So I drove round there and rescued the box from the doorstep where it still waited. The wine has been excellent and didn’t suffer from its odd journey!

My parents gave me WS membership 30yrs ago. I then ended up buying the Christmas wine nearly every year since. A wise present on their part. I keep my eyes peeled for Jancis Robinson recommendations as the choice is otherwise vast.

We’re new to the area and finding Byrnes was a revelation. Like an Aladdin’s cave. The shop is amazing and we only found out about the warehouse last week when I called in for a bottle of whisky for a raffle prize :blush:

The Whalley Wine Shop is also worth a visit. Went there just before last Christmas and have also been to Byrne’s in Clitheroe
