First Naim gear?

I started with a lovely Nap42-5/110 combo back in 1985 :scream:

Around 1988 my Creek Audio 4040 integrated was replaced with a brand spanking new Nait 2 courtesy of Lyric Hi-Fi on Stranmillis Road in Belfast. It was a wonderful match for my lp12 and I still have the Nait in my bedroom. When I get my 500 dr’d I really must treat the Nait to a return trip to Salisbury too - it hasn’t been back in all these years!

2007…SN1 launched and I was smittened. So the 1st Naim incarnation was SN1, Hicap and bare CDX2

Very recent newcomer to Naim, first bit of kit was the CD5si bought last year and since then I’ve also added a Nait XS2. Last year I also upgraded the tonearm and cartridge on my turntable as well as adding a phono stage to go with the XS2 and a new pair of PMC speakers. I’ll need to give the wallet a bit of a rest after all of that before I think about any more kit but next on the list is probably a streamer. I’ve got a Sonos Connect left over from my previous system and it really isn’t man enough for the XS2 and PMC’s.

I bought a Naim NAP180, NAC102, CD5 and a Flatcap 2 in 2002. Played through ProAc Tablette 50’s. It never really sounded great. I blamed the speakers and room acoustics. So after 16 years of dissatisfaction I started to try other speakers. Other ProAc’s, PMC, Kef R3 and ATC. The only one to sound much better was the ATC SCM19. Still not right though. I considered replacing all the Naim until it occurred to me that I hadn’t explored the power supply. So I bought a Naim Napsc for the NAC102. Night and day. Like installing a completely different system. Everything fell into place.

Who would think a little black box would make so much difference.

Back in the day I’d just got my first LP12 and Linn brought out the LK1/LK2 amp. I went to audition taking my Rotel integrated as reference (being sure that is what I would buy). My impression was…Ohh ?. My dealer said ā€œwhat about thisā€ which was a 32.5/160. Mind blown, bought that, so started my route to Naim navana !!!. Come a long way since then

First first Naim amplifier was a 42/110, purchased from Rayleigh Hi-Fi in 1982. At the time, I also purchased a pair of MkI Linn Kans. Turnatble was my existing LP12/Ittok/Rega R100

Started with a Nait 2 at the end of the 1980’s. Still using today in my bedroom system, and still doing a great job!

Naim CD5si was the first piece. Closely followed by DAC V1 and NAT05. Then traded all in towards a streaming setup.

32.5 and 110

It was 1988 and I’d just read the review (in Hifi Review, probably) of the new Nait 2 and decided that that would make a great upgrade from my Creek 4040.

Visited Graham’s Hifi (still in Pentonville Road then) and ended up leaving with a lightly used 42.5/110 having experienced what the guy demoing described as ā€œpre/power nirvanaā€!

And that was the beginning of the slippery slope…

CD5_i_ secondhand in about 2010. I was still at the stage of reading Hi-Fi magazines and noting what they said and since the reviews were good I was tempted. Finding one secondhand sealed the decision.

I think it’s a sign of how ā€˜right’ Naim is that my reading of Hi-Fi mags dropped to almost nothing more or less as I started buying Naim. Interestingly, I had a similar experience with watches - since I bought my Speedmaster, I have next to no interest in looking at watches in shops or magazines, because I never see anything I want more than what I’ve got on my wrist.

My first Naim is a Nova, 2018. Had it 2 months, then upgraded to NDX2\Supernait 2\HiCap DR. My first proper HiFi was an Arcam alpha One CD player / Arcam alpha 5+ Amp with Mission 751 bookshelves in 1996. In 1997 I upgraded to Mission 752 freedom floorstanders. In 2002, I replaced the Arcam kit with a Rega Planet 2000 CD player, a Rega Mira 3 Amp and a Pro-Ject RPM6SB turntable which unfortunately was ill timed. I didn’t know my wife was pregnant with my first son and I started to listen to more music on an iPod than on my system. Ended up selling it in 2005 due to lack of use and have been hifi less until last year, where I did my listening mainly from an iPod speaker and a phone. Loving the new streaming digital era.

NAC102 + NAP180 with YBA CD player. Evolved through around 15 steps into ND555 + NAC252 + NAP250.2. A NAP300 DR will come in a couple of weeks…

CDS2 first. Then NAP300. Then 552. Then Superline. Then NAP500.

Then Fraim.

In pretty deep now. All good.

Nac 62 and Nap 140 first with Linn Sondek and Epos ES14 speakers in 1990. Great start. Hicap within a year and no change for 14 years.

I first heard Naim kit when i was demoing a Linn Intek amp in the early 90s, I bought the amp but the memory of the CDS stayed with me for a long time.

Around 1997 i swapped out the Intek, along with an Arcam Alppha CD player/DAC combo for a NAC72, NAP180 and CD3.5 system

At the time i had Acoustic Energy AE109s and a pair of Kans too, both sounded great but the Kans stayed a while longer (wish i still had them…)

My first Naim was a Nait 3 in 2001, and since then there have many many bits of Naim

I bought my first Naim equipment in 2002, the surround sound set. DVD5, AV2, NAP175, NAP150, n-sats, n-sub, n-cent and Allaes. I had gone into my local Audio Excellence (now closed down) and asked what they could recommend. I listened to this and also an Arcam system which was cheaper and I went for the Naim. I kept it much the same until I moved to streaming a few years back. This past year I upgraded quite a bit.

In 2016 I purchased my first Naim kit, Naim Unitiqute 2 for my secondary system.

At the time I owned a Creek Destiny 2 integrated for my main system. I had owned Rega, Cyrus etc.

Now I have a NAC 552DR, NAP 135.

I think the Unitiqute left a mark:grimacing:
