That is the best advice you can give yourself 
Take it slow and try for yourself. What works for others may not work for you. I have to say that setting up a NAS is not the simplest thing in the world. It can’t be much easier than plugging in a USD stick/drive.

When you use a USB drive be sure to look in the Server input under Local Music. You might logically be expecting to select the USB input in the Naim app, but while this works, the metadata isn’t accessible so you will just get a very basic folder view.

I’ve gone through a similar journey - bought a Synology 124 and 4TB HD over a year ago. Was initially just to rip my CDs and UPnP stream - but it’s now become more of a proper NAS, keeping file archives and (like you) serving as a Time Capsule for two Macs.
One thing to note - as a poster mentioned not partitioning his drive for TC. If you don’t partition or create separate user accounts with size limits, TC will continue to back up until it uses up all of your available storage.
On my 124, I have user accounts with a predefined 500GB size limitation (the size of the drives on both laptops.) Suggest you look into doing the same, otherwise you’ll wake up one day and have 3.9TB of TC backups
