Flaco Jimenez RIP

Sad to see that Flaco Jimenez the accordion maestro has died. Saw him touring with Ry Cooder and playing tracks from the Chicken Skin Music album back in the day.

Yes, I saw him with Ry’s band many years back.

Superb instrumentalist, and he could also sing a bit too.

R.I.P.

Was amazed to read several obituaries which made no mention of his work with Ry at all.

I saw Flaco with his band as part of the WOMAD Festival in Toronto in the '80s. Following the performance we chatted briefly because I was with a university radio station and we played his music. He was very gracious and quite excited when I was able to tell him where the performers could score some complementary beer. My condolences to his family and his many, many fans. R.I.P.

Very sad news. Partners is one of my most played CDs.

Very sad news, let’s celebrate his artistry.

I saw Flaco with Ry Cooder at Birmingham NEC many years ago, just after Ry released Get Rhythm. Flaco then did his own tour with a band and I caught them at the Fleece and Firkin in Bristol, that was a superb gig, he had everyone dancing (unlike at the NEC which was seated). I enjoyed a beer at the bar with Flaco and some of the band in the interval, he wanted to know where I’d got my Ry Cooder T-shirt (it was a bootleg :joy:)!

The ‘Tex-Mex’ accordion accompaniment on Get Rhythm, Chicken Skin Music and later Ry Cooder albums still transport me to that area today.

He did a lot of work with Dwight Yoakam and the The Mavericks as well, all worth looking up.
