One of the guys I sit near is a friend of a past City physio and his take on our injury plight is the training nowadays is too intensive and players over train.
It does seem that modern players attract more injuries than was the case several years ago.
Our physical fitness team appeared on a recent edition of That Wrexham Podcast. Very interesting. Their description of our training didn’t sound like that at all. Gym work on some mornings to focus on specific issues, maybe 2 or 3 days training per week at the very most as the biggest single issue is the fixture list and having sufficient rest between games. 1 day on match prep i.e. running through specific attacking or defensive moves. If you were gym fit then many players would play 2/3 games pw but only train on 2.
I have thought this for a long time, previously posting about it here & elsewhere.
Not only has nobody agreed with me, no one has actual bothered to reply!
Whilst obviously seeing very little live football compared to you & many others here, I have long observed that the players (both teams) pre match warm ups are often so vigorous that the players look exhausted when leaving the field prior to the actual match.
Back in about Jan. 2006 I saw Plymouth v Norwich in what turned out to be Dean Ashtons’ last match. Despite being absolutely freezing, both set of players virtually crawled of the pitch at the end of the warm up &, sure enough to no spectators surprise, both sides completely ran out of steam 15 to 20 minutes before the end of the match.
Norwich currently have fifteen members of the first team squad injured.
Our injury level has been high enough in recent times for the club to review our training operations. It will be interesting to see the conclusions.
Similar problem at Pompey and two seasons running now. I know that injuries are sometime just bad luck but when the pattern continues for more than a season and a half, it would suggest there’s some underlying cause.
Argyle too, the injuries are relentless - and more often than not are training-related. Something is definitely up.
This…
Mild excitement at being sat in the Spring sunshine in Portugal and suddenly realising I can legitimately stream our match. Inevitably the precursor to a defeat then ![]()
I feel I’m going to wake up and find Philippe Clement is still at Rangers.
Brilliant performance against a Leicester side full of expensive talent.
Clement said he was without fourteen of the first team squad but still we outplayed Leicester away. His emphasis on everybody contributing to the success of the club, including fan support, is wonderful to experience.
Is there a better manager in the championship?
Absolutely the worst team we’ve played this season bar none. You held that accolade under Manning but Leicester snatched it with ease. Full of PL players who know that no-one is taking them back to the PL. Even Sheffield Wednesday showed more than Leicester.
Cracking win. Under the cosh for 97 minutes and still found a way to win it. Charlton ripped us apart 5 times in the first half and ought to have been well ahead. They exploited Hyam and Doyle’s lack of pace really well but they didn’t take their clear cut chances and we took the one half chance we had. A goal which looks better the more you see it.
Second half was more of the same but Hyam was a colossus and despite the now traditional ineptitude of Moore, O’Brien and Whitehead we stood firm and, just when they thought they’d got their goal, Arthur made a match winning save.
It’s nice to win when you are clearly in form & the better side.
When you are not & still find a way to win, it bodes well for even better times ahead.
Bit of a day really. Wrexham women beat Cardiff last weekend to win the Adran Trophy but today they kicked off at the same time as the men and were streamed for free as they played Cardiff again but this time in the league. The 3-1 win may turn out to be a significant turning point in the history of the Welsh League which until now has been dominated by Swansea and Cardiff.
Entertaining game at Portman Road - some very good pacy Ipswich team moves and excellent goals plus a fantastic free kick at the death from the Swansea number 9 that crashed into the bar. Credit to the Swans they came to play not shut up shop. Weirdest chant of the season “Snoop Dog what’s the score; Snoop Dog Snoop Dog what’s the score".
Colin’s back
Wotton was the February Manager Of The Month. A few days later…
Offspring wanted to go see some Portuguese football. This was what we got. Fifth tier and even the beautiful weather couldn’t hide the bleak nature of it all. Great history of appointing very silly managers e.g. Abel Xavier and Edgar Davids.
Boro win handy for them and definitely handy for us. Give. the fixtures 4 points is no cushion at all.
