Football Season 2026/2027

Have always been perturbed by the selling of 10% of Wrexham AFC to Apollo Global Management. The long term consequences of the entry of private equity are never good even if the short term gains look superficially fantastic. Have only just realised that their leader is on the Board Of Peace. Feels like another Lucas Oil in the making.

They didn’t comment further but then they didn’t need to. Their previous comments spoke eloquently for them and then they were gone in a puff of smoke.

Watching Sunderland v Wrexham on S4C. Sunderland playing in 10 pink goalkeeping tops.

That’s the “Elvis shirt”. Google it Mike. You really couldn’t make it up!

Well, putting aside I don’t use Google… erm. Talk about tenuous. It certainly recreates the Elvis 50s colours but…

I suppose football has a long history of immensely silly connections and bad shirts. This can be added to the list.

My only issue is of course that the 2 of the 3 kits released this season (so far) for us might be politely described as bang average/non-descript and they contain a replicated kop barrier, which looks just as silly.

Sunderland v Wrexham was live on S4C and at a sensible time. Having ploughed through the Sunday papers in the garden this morning and finished a book this afternoon I couldn’t think of a reason not to so…

Sunderland have played less pre season games than us yet were plainly fitter. I’ll pin it on the plane travel for now but I’m not convinced.

They were also pretty impressive. Brobbey was a nightmare. His hold up play could be seen in direct comparison to Keiffer Moore and the latter was pathetic. Young Chris Rigg looked stupendous. Angulo, the Ecuadorean who was MOTM against Germany in the WC, also looked superb. All 3 exposed the continued lack of pace in our team.

Their winning goal was made by Brobbey but should have been a routine save for Arthur, who continues to show he’s going to struggle to keep his place this season. All that height and he just doesn’t want to dominate his box. Hyam is looking as he did at the end of last season i.e. a spent force reduced to dragging players down. I’m still waiting for Vyner to show me anything and… it’s just not happening. If he starts at RB ahead of young Max then, alongside Hyam, I think we have real issues.

Midfield is hard to judge because Sheaf is again unfit and we have an embarrassment of riches all at broadly the same level. Only Dobbo plays on the front foot though.

Up front is easy. Moore was anonymous and awful. Cadamarteri and Smith look increasingly impressive. Keillor-Dunne just needs a goal to settle him.

The wing back issue needs resolving although once again Cacace, now clearly fit after the WC, looked decent and Barney again showed he’s something to offer which is far better than Longman. Parky seems to have decided not though for reasons which escape me. All quiet on the Devlin et al front though. Imray was impressive defensively on his debut though. Need to see more of him going forward.

Sunderland brought Patterson on in goal, which rather suggested he might not be signing for us. No way of judging him in that short time.

Enjoyed the ref. Played advantages whilst indicating fouls that he’d come back to. Never did. Refused to accept the game was a friendly so booked a Sunderland player before they could sub him. Player was raging.

Think Sunderland have it in them to do a bit more than last season. I continue to think that mid table will be a good season for us, get the kop built and then push on the season after next.

Great match report Mike. I know nothing about Wrexham apart from what you write here but that was enjoyable. Thanks.

Well, likely a free and spare ticket next to me on the 19th of September should you wish to learn more  .

I always find it odd when people write about a match but the only variable in the game was their team.

“We were sh%t. We should be beating teams like that all day long. Their number 11 was fouling x repeatedly. The referee was a homer. “ etc.

Most times you lose because the opposition were faster, better skill wise or tactically and maybe even just lucky and on the right side of genuinely fine margins.

Loads of people claim to “like football” but what they really mean is that they like their team. That’s fine but, I genuinely “like football”. I can appreciate great play, great goals, great officials without any of it requiring me to blame someone in my team as to the cause of it. When there is blame I’ll say so but other things play a part just as often.

I understand the impulse but always struggle with “Well that was a great goal but… x should have y”. Sometimes/most times it was just a great goal.

I really enjoyed Brobbey today. For the Netherlands I’m sure there are players their fans think are far better but today he was pretty much unplayable and it was just fun watching our defenders struggle to do anything with him. When they resorted wrestling, throwing and shirt/short tugging he just shrugged them off.

Good!

Pompey has just loaned Jordan Williams to Blackpool for the season so we’re down to two right backs in Devlin and Swanson so can’t afford to lose either of them now.

Duly noted.

I’ve no idea whether the deal is dead. Parky told us it would be a very slow window until teams got their WC players back so I’d expect things to speed up as soon as we’re back from the US this week. Things should become an awful lot clearer before we play Boro on Friday and before the season really starts with a Welsh derby.

Was expecting to take 1,400 to Cardiff for our opener given that it’s a Monday night and the 8pm kick off makes it impossible for most to get home.

Looks like we’re about to sell out all 3,200.

They do sponsors differently in Scotland

You’re going up against this though.

Oh dear.

Went to watch York v Crawley Monday night. Nice to see live football again after a few months off. Not going to Boro v Wrexham on Friday night. Stupid timing, live on ITV and Parky has said it’s being treated as a pre season friendly.

And so it begins.

A Carabao Cup game away at Boro we all want to care about but both managers feel obligated to treat as a pre season friendly. It’s on ITV1. I’ll no doubt watch it with the offspring and their GF but it’s not going to be scintillating viewing.

In the meantime the club have been sending out digital membership cards which double as season tickets.

Mrs. H. membership won’t load into Apple Wallet and Ticketmaster were basically telling her she didn’t know what she was doing until they saw the screen shots.

I was due an Adult Disabled and Companion ticket. They’ve excelled themselves and sent me 3 season tickets. 2 for my own seat. Knew it was too good to be true that I got both for Cardiff away. Spoke to friends in the DSA and, sure enough, loads of people refused a Companion ticket.

Anyways, the season starts here so good luck everybody. Those of us familiar to the thread and those whose clubs have come up or down.

Blimey - we have actually signed someone! From what I can remember, young Joel looked quite impressive at Brighton.

Looks like there is a problem with your pursuit of Manor Soloman, Kev - Spurs seem to be dithering over the small print. He would be an excellent signing for WHU and was brilliant for Leeds when they won the league, his goal on the last day clinching the title.

@twofifty and @dave-marshall - any idea why we did not sign him on a permanent basis last year? He was terrific for us.

If social media is to be believed, we opted for Noah Okafor instead - ironically (given Okafor’s injury record) but not unreasonably, there were concerns over Solomon’s past injury record. A fully fit Solomon in the Championship would be a real asset for any club I reckon.

We did in fact try to sign him, but apparently, since he had played so well for us and remained largely injury free, he felt that he would try and play his way back into contention at Spuds.

By the time the penny had dropped that he wouldn’t be featuring under the new manager, Thomas Frank, deadline day was approaching, and we had signed Okafor, so off went Manor on loan to Villarreal, with no option to buy.

So, there it is, and yes, it would have been interesting to see him play for The Mighty Whites in The Big Boys League. :man_shrugging:

I heard. Shame, as I think he could be a really useful player for us.
