> Perhaps some of the problem is that the fitness staff feel that they have to justify their positions & salaries.

Worth watching some episodes of Welcome to Wrexham on this. Ours justify their salaries by what they stop players doing rather than what they ask them to do.

Several players have been banned from the gym. Several kept from training and sent to the gym.

This stuff is so data driven that I think we’re long long past the idea of people having to justify their existence. These are staff who will be honest with a manager and say if a player is not fit when he says he is and vice verse. A significant amount of training is so personalised that the only time players set foot on a pitch is to do tactical stuff.

There are so many fixtures at Arsenal that the players rarely do any intensive training.

My business was nothing like football,or any other sport, but was full of people trying to justify their positions by creating work for the sake of it with little regard as to whether it benefitted the company & having no regard at all for the increased workload load it invariably produced for those having to implement a constant stream of new instructions. They just wanted the boss to see how hard they were working.

The computer revolution made it easy to collect huge amounts of data which was often collected ‘just in case’, which was either not used at all or confused the situation when used totally inappropriately for the task required. The successful companies were those which discarded data they felt irrelevant & streamlined their systems using the minimum of information to achieve their aims.

I can’t help wondering if it is often a case of ‘too many cooks…’. Perhaps good old common sense should be applied here.

Hopefully you’ll get decent money for all these overpriced and overpaid players in your relegation fire sale next summer…

Don’t worry @learningtofly , deep down, the Gooners are a bit nervous. Hence all the bitching about either our new players or our new coach.
Not maybe nervous about next season, but long term it looks like our lot are starting to get their s…t together.

We will have a reasonable summer to bed these new players in, and hopefully come out firing by mid August (unlike previous times when our new players had to introduce themselves to their new teammates late September!).

The Gooners won’t win the league next season - last season they were extremely lucky as Citeh were fading into the sunset, Yanitid were a mess, Chelsea an every crazier mess, Liverpool rudderless and underperforming, and us a joke.

Sacked all of twice. Both times by loons. His issue was lack of due diligence by his team. Thus an ill-feted spell at Brighton where he somehow believed he’d be changing their model rather than having to comply with it.

As a neutral I’d say he’s joined Spurs at a perfect moment. He points at a player and the hierarchy go get ‘em. Won’t last forever but right now looks a perfect move for both parties.

Firstly I’ve always liked De Zerbi for falling out with and selling us Leandro Trossard and I’m sure I’ll like him more after a failed stint at The Spuds. Bigger and better managers have failed and fallen out with the club in recent years but time will tell does throwing another billion pound with no real planning at the problem finally bring the hapless spuds success.

They seem crystal clear that success for them this season is being seen to have addressed obvious and long standing squad weaknesses and, for this season, top half of the table and playing attractive football. After that more planning will be required but this is the first time in decades manager and hierarchy are aligned so I suspect people will underestimate them at their peril.

I heard the same last year, the year before that, the year before that and the year before that leaving aside all the net spend waffle the Spuds have spent £1000,000,000 on 43 players and not including Ryan Mason’s couple of stints have had 10 managers just in the last 5 years.
Roberto De Zerbi, Bruno Saltor, Igor Tudor, Thomas Frank, Ange Postecoglou, Cristian Stellini, Antonio Conte, Nuno Espírito Santo, José Mourinho.

There are at least two arguably more managers in that list who are better than De Zerbi who have had the boards ‘backing’ and have had a share of a billion pounds to spend they all failed and left the club some openly and publicly ridiculing it.

</div>

Time will tell, but I’ll be very surprised if the last laugh isn’t on you. Oh, and notwithstanding the fact that you can’t just “leave aside” net spend, if you think that the managers you’ve named were adequately backed then you’ve really not been paying attention.

Why are you so hung up on Spurs, anyway? You’re title winners - surely you can rise above this tribal nonsense?

</div>

Yeah but it turned out that backing was absolutely what they **didn’t** have. What they had was the Chelsea like expectation they’d build a team from young players with no experience or leadership in key positions etc. When each of those managers demanded experience be brought in Levy wouldn’t have it with any of them and out they went. The new regime will doubtless make mistakes. All do. I doubt that will be one of them.
