Robin Hoods Bay for the best fish & chips with bits!
Scraps surely? ![]()
York itself is an amazing place. Railway Museum, Minster and walk on the Roman Wall.
Castle Howard and Harewood House worth doing day trips also.
Note if you wish you can be ripped off at a Betty’s in Northallerton, Ilkley and York too.

I live on Yorkshire coast but visit the lovely Grassington regularly, they film the new series “All Creatures” there, We were there on one visit filming. Im there again later this month good pubs and walks. Enjoy. I’m london born but been up here 38 years, they talk to me now !!!
For a ‘bracing’ afternoon I always thought that Ilkley Moor to watch the gliders etc. was pretty good, followed by a trip to the posh ‘chip oil’ at Harry Ramsdens in Guisley, although I believe that establishment is under different ownership now.
The piano is easier to hear if the table conversation starts to sag but so is the clanking crockery.
And Harlow Carr, theres a nice garden view though.
It’s a Wetherby Whaler now and there are much better fish ‘n’ chip shops. It’s still an experience mindst. Opulent for a chippy. Maypole in Otley is our go to close by.
I wonder if they still have the chandeliers in the seated area? Many years since I was last there.
Yes they do. Can recommend Mother Hubbard’s in nearby Baildon, better fish ‘n’ chips than Wetherby Whaler, even though they have a pianist at the weekends!
Scrachins where I come from !!
James Herriott’s veterinary practice was indeed in Thirsk, and the practice buildings have been converted into a rather good museum.
Alf Wight (JH being a pen name) lived his later years in the tiny village of Thirlby where I did a lot of my growing up and where some of my dear family still live. There’s absolutely nowt to do if you don’t live there, though, apart from enjoying the view and walking up to the Cleveland Way path above Whitestonecliff. Take in Lake Gormire on the way up. You’ll be in the NY Moors National Park by then, which makes it slightly ironic that it’s the Dales where the original TV series was filmed and which became famous off the back of it.
Given my forum name & avatar, you won’t be surprised to find I heartily recommend York. The Minster is probably my favourite building on the planet and Betty’s is great fun if you can find it at a quiet time. Ignore all the grumpies who moan about the price. There’ll be a cheap caff down the road they can be satisfied with.
An undiscovered gem in York is the old Assembly Rooms which is now a decent chain Italian restaurant. You’ll never have a pizza in such excessively opulent surroundings.

Betty’s at Harlow Carr is, without doubt, the best of the lot. My problem is I can’t get past the breakfast they serve - other menu items available. The RHS garden is great and the walk through the woods into Harrogate itself is also worth the trip.
Remember them (Mother Hubbards) when they were in Bradford - must be over 50 years ago now. At the time they were the ‘go to’ chippy.
Yes, it was recommended over Wetherby Whaler by hotel we stayed at last September.
Agreed, Harrogate is too noisy and York is full of people who want to go to Betty’s rather than going for the food on offer. I do think however they are trading on their reputation these days. As a customer for over 35 years, and maybe due to over exposure to their cakes, the quality and standards have dropped.
There’s clearly differing views on too noisy but we’ve never found Harrogate Betty’s noisy let alone too noisy. It’s an expensive place to eat for sure but for us it’s worth the price every now and then because of the environment, service & quality. Old enough to remember Betty’s in Leeds. Used to enjoy Little Betty’s in York. The big one is good but it’s no Harrogate.
Hooray for Lancashire - a green and pleasant land.
While on holiday in Yorkshire, you could ride a bike to the Lancashire coast and back! ![]()
