FrankenDibbles!

I have moved this to a new thread because its likely to run for a while as I move through the process. Perhaps Richard will be kind enough to transfer recent posts on this to here.

It currently running in the show us your naim speakers thread.

After some planning and discussions with James at TomTom here we are:

Firstly let me say what an absolute gent James is. Its all to easy to get cynical about this game and its such a pleasure to find people like James still so invested in naim and hifi in general I fancy what he does not know about hifi is not worth knowing.

Secondly its worth pointing out I knew exactly what I was getting into. Thats not the ‘shipped’ woofer and the treble plate is odd, and well its all odd isn’t it? The boxes I would wager were knocked together in the factory, in the main raw MDF, no inner or outer veneer. The trebles are probably past their best and have no bounce what so ever.

I have not a clue what the woofers are, the basket is well made, the cone is a paper affair, it looks similar to the ATC, there is no markings. It does not weigh a tonne. It sounds sublime*

  • I have never seen DBLs in the flesh, neither heard them before.

Today I have temporarily set them up, I replaced the knackered foam in the base units, filled all spike holes and replaced the aluminium pads. Gooped up the base interface to the bottom box and engaged my super squints whilst plugging in the totally gorgeous cross overs. Lets be clear I dont know much about much but I know quality components when I see them. The big coil on there is is like 15cm across. All cardas caps etc.

With the seal made on the bass units and tightening them down, the bolts were like hand tight the sound is, well, emotional.

I am amazed by the bass. In front of it, you feel it, but walk to the next room and its not an issue.

Clearly these are a project speaker and I very much look forward to what the next few months bring. The ‘bones’ are there, with a clear heritage, this may well be the mother pair, and for all their ills, I am happy with that.

In terms of the Naim BS Bingo lets get that out of the way.

'Pah, Hegel! Chinese crap! You need at least 3x500 to make a DBL sound even mildly good.

Yeah probably

‘Your room is not good at all, they probably sound like crap, in the corners like that’.

No they sound amazing. That back wall, whilst floating is stuffed full of underlay and sound absorption material as well as wood slats.

‘Those mids look suspect are they the shipping version?’

No idea, they look very similar to the NBLs, I would say they are proper, but no matter I have new(ish) tweeters and spare mids from NBLs. I am a lucky person.

‘Those aren’t the bass units, you got done!’

No I didn’t. I fancy the provenance. Incidentally there is no evidence any kind of sealant was used on the bass boxes, ever, just as an aside.

‘Are you insane?’

Yes, very likely.

Whats next?

I know that this is of interest to only a handful of men, but I want these to look as beautiful as they sound right now. Its very likely I will swap in the newer mids and trebles. I will then listen for some time before deciding if I need to swap in the ‘official’ ATCs. But to be honest right now, I see no need*

I am considering veneers. I want a veneer wide enough to not need book matching on the sides, which restricts choice. Likely walnut, which yes I appreciate could at any day turn old hat.

*I have never heard DBLs.

I think they look good even with the Panda finish. Wished i bought the pair i had the chance of at ‘Signals’ 8-10 years back. Like new in a beautiful wood finish. It would have meant using them in my office with only a couple of inches between them and the same to the sides. Still think they’d have worked fine for nearfield listening as per my SBL.

You asked “what’s next?”.

WARNING: Some readers might be distressed by my suggestion ……..

Get a measurement microphone and do some measurements.

BTW. Really love what you are doing here!

DBL deserve to be reborn! Just build them again. How hard can it be! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Nice one Gary. Unique DBLs with some interesting history.

Good luck with your project :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

To be fair I have a UMIK 1 and homecurve, it did not occur to me to be honest!

This photo earlier, in the process of swapping them back out for one of my pairs of NBLs.

Today I was sporting a pretty significant hang over from sitting up late listening to so much music!

So today was not much at all, plus my PC decided it would die, because it knew I had spent out money recently. I was planning to bring these into sketchup but hey ho.

So today I replaced the mids and tweeters for those out of one of my NBL pairs.

My nbl trebles are only a few years old so I was expecting a nice uplift and was not disappointed. The mids are identical to the NBLs, including the printed name on the back of the cone.

Of note on my pair of mids at least no damping material on the back, I wonder if other users know if theirs do or do not. To be fair the mids sound awesome anyway but I swapped them out working on the assumption my 2003 nbls will be newer than these by probably a decade. This being said I am willing to bet all the mids in all the nbls/dbls are the same/similar age anyhow.

I also hid the cross overs behind the false wall there, very nice!

Tomorrow I will bring the dimensions into Sketch up and begin work on the grills.

I have bought the dimensions into sketchup, random drivers I found on 3D warehouse though, but gives me something to hang ideas off.

The purpose of this is so I can now move on to designing the grills. Of course the foams would be proper, but I want to come away with this with change in my pocket. to that end I shall do what I did for nbls and sbls and thats to create grill frames in 3D for printing. Its not ideal in this instance I acknowledge.

However the baffles on these are so massive, I am hopeful that changes to sound will be minimal, its more about ‘finishing’. However the plan is they will attache invisibly so I have choices.

My other nbls are used in my office right next to me ears! Sounds wonderful!

Nice, I’ve seen those on the Tom Tom website. Good to see them get some use in a real system. Good luck deciding what to do with them

They are good at Tom Tom. I bought my CD5, XS3 and Chord Hugo TT2, from them, and had a NAIT3 and UnitiQute serviced via them. Always been good to deal with.

Great! DIY DBL!

I’m enjoying my rebuilt SBLs as I type this. Your project is very interesting. Is that FN Acustico you are using for your “service” wall? How have you attached it?

No its hand made. Behind those strips are about a 10cm deep boxes, filled with rubber underlay and sound absorption panels. Each is attached with 3D printed parts for adjustment so are easily removed to reveal the total rats next of wires.

Thank you for the read. Larger speakers can portrait scale on another scale. Will definately follow this thread.

Can I ask DBL owners is the treble connection a bit out of the way on the production models? Not in the main gap of the back of the speaker?

Does anyone know what the soft material in the bottom box would be called, it looks a bit like hair?

In one of the DBLs its what I would consider standard stuff like I have seen in SBLs etc, however in the other one, it looks a very strange green. I am guessing they were trying different materials I have no idea?

The colour not such an issue but the old foam from the chambers above has totally deteriorated into it and frankly its disgusting. I was expecting to see mouse poo in there!

This week I will be starting the prep journey and its going to be a long one.

I think the cabs were probably made at naim, the black top box I would surmise is the final production part but the rest there is glued and screwed and this will all need to be dead flat.

30 linear metres of veneer ordered.

Which kind of veneer did you go for?

I have gone for something different, eucalyptus.

Also, music selection being shown on the TV. I love that album…

IIRC it was goat hair - same in the SBL and SL2, although I’ve never seen the green stuff before.
