The worst product Naim ever made was the Aro-matic. Tellingly, they only developed it grudgingly from fears that owners might not be able to hand cue the Aro. Nobody at Naim really wanted it and nobody I knew actually used it. I remember there was a little cupboard full of them. It had been a as very long time since anybody had need to fetch one from the cupboard. I have no idea what happened to them all - probably sent to scrap.
Otherwise, I might nominate the N-Vi. It was brilliant but also flawed, which is probably true of other bits of Naim kit; not truly bad, just with niggles or flaws that held them back from being truly great.
I think Richard sums the N-Vi up well. As an early adopter, it was a great bit of kit, especially for its video quality, but ultimately a right PITA to own.
My nomination would be the NAP 250.2. Naim took the excellent Olive 250 and turned it into a dull and ponderous thing. They fixed it with the 250DR, but the 250.2 remains an unfortunate blip in an illustrious lineage.
AIUI, not a true surround decoder, but more of a ātake the stereo, and give a bit of ambient-rear-soundā, which sounded a nice idea to me. Been looking for one for years to give it a try (and I do have a spare pair of Meridian M20s sitting around doinā nowt!).
I liked the NAP250.2. When I was trying to decide whether to let my 500 go, I settled on a NAC552 with a NAP250.2 - with a CDS3 and SL2s it worked really well. I think you just needed to get the balance right with other kit in the system, especially the speakers.
I used to have one on the shelf behind my desk at the factory. IO really wanted one for myself so finally tracked one down after years of searching. I have it, but havenāt tried it out yetā¦
And so do I. I donāt have one, but they can be bought for peanuts and are far better than anything mainstream nowadays Hifi. Iām considering to gift one to each kid who leaves my house.
(Thatās poor really, my grandfather gave his 2 kids a car and house when he was done with them)
I used a 250.2 for years before I had it serviced and upgraded to 250DR. The DR was a big improvement (but I did DR to HC at same time) but I thought it always sounded great with my 282/HC and Dynaudio Contour S3.4 speakers.
Thereās no way the 250.2 should be in this list.
Nether should the AV1. We had an absolutely superb demo at the Bristol hifi show in 95/96.
If I had to put something, itās more disappointing than bad, the Ariva speaker. I thought it just didnāt āhangā together well and I listened to it quite a bit.
Which is why I was on the lookout for one for several years. But I assume that it never sold well enough to keep the bean counters happyā¦ā¦(@Richard.Dane might have better insight, but might not be able to share that knowledge )
