That’s wonderful, it’s always good to see hedgehogs out and about.
We use to have them as regular visitors but a couple of years ago, next doors neighbour’s dog savaged the last one.
The neighbours were devastated, they took it to a vets who advised that it had to be put down.
We’ve not seen one since. I still keep putting water out though.
This was ours. We once saw three in the garden at once, two adults and one youngster.

The centre said they receive a lot of them damaged by strimmers. Wish people would use their common sense. It’s not only hedgehogs damaged by strimmers, but frogs/toads, newts and much more.

Putting water out is very important for them, particularly at this time of year with drought. It’s all dead easy to do and means a lot.

We are lucky to have a rescue centre just a mile away. Then, we are conflicted, we have cats and unless we monitor, put the food out when a hedgehog is visible, the cats eat the food, whether it is cat food or “specialist” hedgehog food.
On top of that, new neighbours grubbed up the ancient hedge at the end of their garden and erected a solid six foot high fence which blocks what used to be a natural corridor across the estate. It effectively stops wildlife, local cats and worse, means the local foxes only now visit our garden. I know they gave tried getting into the wood/prunings pile where the hedgehogs overwintered. In April/May we had the adults and five youngsters. In the last month I have only seen mum and one baby.
We can but try.

The rescue centre gave me advice on how to feed the hedgehogs without cats or rats getting the food. I’ll post something when I have a chance.

Robot lawnmowers are supposed to be not good for hedgehogs

Shared it with a councillor who is trying to promote hedgehog paths.

I’d love to see more pictures of the hog & its hoghanger.

I’m toying with the idea to get a nightcam too, there seems to be going on so much in the night.

A few months ago, we had a gate and fence made between the house and garage. I instructed the fencer to cut a hedgehog hole in the gravel board, as here.

I haven’t seen hedgehogs for a couple of years since we lost the last one but we’re prepared.

Indeed. I often spot them when I close the garden / doors at night which is around 10:30.

Chillies (cayenne) are enjoying the heat this year - no need for a polytunnel. No room for one either.

Those Canna lilies look very good, do you lift them and dry store overwinter?
Earlier this year I planted Canna Cleopatra right next to my Ensete banana. It grew really well plenty of leaves but no flower spikes, I was a bit concerned that it wasn’t going to flower this year. However, a couple of days ago a flower spike appeared and I’ve just checked again and there’s a second.

I can’t make my mind up whether to lift or not when the temperature starts dropping.

Unfortunately the little baby hedgehog died.

Simply putting out a plant tray of water for them helps them enormously. I’m amazed from the camera footage, how much the adult drinks from our tray over the past 2 nights. Cat/kitten biscuits (not fish flavour) is massive help too. Slugs and snails only account for about 3% of their diet; they don’t particularly like them and they give hedgehogs lungworm and other parasite infections. There are ways to feed them without attracting other vermin or cats to the biscuits.

lots of water out tonight .

There is a grain field at the back of the house and that means vermin.

Hedgehogs tend to go walkabout at this time of year

Two wasps nests in the garden this week. Completely trashed by badgers - they dug them both up overnight leaving big holes in the ground - they can certainly shift some earth.

My hog disappeared about a fortnight ago. His apparent route into the garden is unobstructed. New residents over the back have been busy strimming ,mowing and de shrubing. Perhaps this is the reason.
Still leave water out but did notice a squirrel eating the hog’s grub.
