Gene Hackman: Hollywood legend dies aged 97 - BBC News

How sad. An iconic part of my childhood in the Superman films and many others as I grew up.

Always a great actor, Iā€™d watch a film simply because he was in it.

I went to see Superman at the cinema when it came out, I was 11 at the time and loved it.

He was 95 but - a huge loss. So many great films and fine performances. Sad news.

What a loss - superb actor. Superman films fun but he did so much other better work.
Popeye Doyle in the French Connection films, in FFCā€™s ā€˜The Conversationā€™ and in ā€˜The Unforgivenā€™ with Clint Eastwood off the top of my head.
If you saw his name in the cast list of a film then it was a pretty good indicator of a quality film

Tragic to read that he died with his wife and dog at there home.

Great actor.

Yes, what a great character though, as others have said, he was 95 and had lived the life. Strange circumstances with his wife and dog having died too.

RIP The Conversation is still one of my favorites

Sad to hear this news, and sorry that his dog (and wife) went with him. He was in so many great films, itā€™s hard to pick a favourite, although I would probably give the nod to Mississippi Burning, Night Moves or (guilty pleasure) No Way Out. Farewell to a giant of cinema.

The Conversation is such a superb film and impeccable pacing and attention to detail. Iā€™ll probably remember him most for that, Hunt for the Red October, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

You always knew if Gene Hackman was in it, it was going to be pretty good.

The loss of legends is starting to get me down and I feel like there are only a few left. But I guess it thatā€™s more an aspect of our age than the age of the people we lost.

I think you mean Crimson Tideā€¦

ā€œWeā€™re here to preserve democracy, not practise itā€ was a line I remember using and being used a lot in my Navy days.

Ah yes. Correct. October was that one with Ford. Senior moment.

Appearing as a Polish brigade leader, joining many a leading group of actors, in Dickie Attenboroughā€™s film Bridge To Far, which included, Connery, Bogart, Fox, Hopkins, Olivier, Ullmann, Caan, Oā€™Neal, Redford, to. aim a few.
Versatility to play a ā€˜foreignā€™ role in the company of many great actors, was in that film, no mean feat, It may be a film about war, but the historic context, imho, it attempts to bring the history to a wider audience.
RiP.

A legend. Movies like The Conversation, Mississippi Burning and The French Connection are among my all time favorites. And how is it possibile to forget the cameo in Young Frankenstein?

Very sad and surprised to hear this news, his wife and his dog went with him, no foul play?
