Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I’ve always loved 10CC. I really enjoyed reading this little interview.
I don’t think it’s anything to be ashamed of. They did some brilliantly witty and musical stuff. Especially the first few albums.
They were wonderful up to How Dare You, then it was downhill. Sheet Music, Original Soundtrack and How Dare You are all brilliant in my view. It’s amazing to think Gouldman is now 78. But then I can’t get me head around being 64 next month. Will I rent that cottage on the Isle of Wight, if it’s not too dear. Mrs HH says no, Provence will be more fun.
Thankyou……special memories
10cc were really excellent. Shame the four split up so soon.
I agree that it became less interesting after those albums and I only heard a limited amount of their stuff after those. I think you should also include the first album despite some things being a bit “obvious”.
Debut album through to How Dare You were wonderful. Sheet Music remains a favourite although there are magnificent individual tracks sprinkled throughout all four. The early Godley and Creme solo stuff was equally quirky and compelling (yes, including Consequences) before they started having hits and doing video. Saw the pretend 10cc when Gouldman unexpectedly brought Kev on stage. Couldn’t believe it.
Well worth digging out GG/06 just to hear Kevin Godley sing so beautifully on Beautifulloser.com.
Listen to Mrs HH HH Provence will be more fun as for 10cc J. Marr’s opening riff to Big Mouth Strikes Again will be more fun and will have you feeling less than half of those 64 years.
There’s lots of time left yet for cottages and wet Fish and Chips go and have a Salad Nicoise and a nice glass of cold local white instead.
I’ll certainly take a look at that. A master of the songwriting craft. Before 10cc he penned hits for groups like The Hollies and The Yardbirds. I saw 10cc at Portsmouth Guildhall on the Original Soundtrack tour and they were great. I’m with @HungryHalibut in thinking the later offerings were less interesting.
We went to see him a few years ago at the Theatre Royal in Winchester. A really nice night in a small venue.
The BBC programme The Songwriters Circle featuring GG alongside Fran Healy and Ron Sexsmith performing ( and talking about) their songs on acoustic guitars is worth a look also.
Indeed it is. Truly a regret that BBC don’t do those any more. A lot of them were fantastic.
