I’ve just added a XPS power supply to my HDX and in standby setting the CD has started to hum (spin).
Disconnect the XPS and silence, CD reader stops spinning.
There isn’t a CD in the carriage so I’m completely lost as to why the CD reader spins in standby mode but not when out of standby or not when the XPS power supply is disconnected. Help
Is the Burndy cable an S-XPS type?
I wonder whether @NeilS has any ideas here?
Yes SXPS 0025
Is S-XPS different?
It’s an improvement on the older XPS Burndy. However the HDX was designed around the S-XPS burndy so just wondering aloud whether that might have been an issue if you had been using an older Burndy cable. Hopefully @NeilS will see the thread and may have some ideas. Otherwise it’s probably one for Naim support.
Are you sure it’s coming from the CD loader & not the cooling fan?
Regards
Neil.
I will double check, however I not back home until tomorrow. One thing I must say is the system sounds a lot more musical with the additional power supply, wish I had bought one years ago.
Neil you are spot on, it is the cooling fan not the transport.
I’m still puzzled as I have owned the HDX for many many years and never heard the fan before. Perhaps as I age my hearing is improving, I wish.
There are 2 or 3 temperature monitors in the HDX. You can check their status using the browser interface (possibly also the desktop client, I don’t remember). This would give you an indication of whether any internal components are actually overheating (possibly indicating that they are not performing properly) or maybe the fan is coming on in error.
Thank you for the help and information.
The issue seems to have self corrected, I am not hearing the fan anymore and there is no excessive heat to the touch if the case.
I’m now thinking because my system is always on, it’s only powered down when I go away on holiday, the exceptional high ambient temperatures we are experiencing in West Sussex triggered the fan, even though the HDX was in standby mode.
That being purely coincidental to adding the additional power supply, led me to incorrectly think I had a fault.
All is now well and I’m enjoying listening to all my albums one after the other, with new appreciation. Is it worth the expense of adding a power supply to an HDX?
Yes it certainly is
Had the same issue with my hdx years ago. I had the fan replaced and the unit was checked and new sw installed.
After many years the power supply board went bang in my HDX literally, lots of component damage on the board.
The board being now obsolete wasn’t worth repairing, so I replaced it myself with the current design power supply, as this service was no longer available from Naim.
The replacement board is smaller and the seven pin connector was different so I had to make some minor modification, nothing major.
That’s what led me to purchase the XPS-2.
While electronics are no problem, many years ago I was a service engineer for Belchers part of Currys. Software is a different kettle of fish though.
I have only once succeeded in getting the HDX connected to the web. That was when I had a laptop, now I just have an android smartphone.
So any CD’s copied just list as unknown, therefore I have not copied one for a number of years, just using the HDX as a CD player.
I have tried setting up a network on my smartphone but never managed to do so.
The most common cause of connection problems with the HDX is plugging in the Ethernet cable after it’s powered up.
Power down the HDX fully, leave it for a few minutes, plug in an Ethernet cable you know to be working, then turn on the HDX.
In theory you don’t need any other device to control it. You should be able to do everything through the touchscreen display.
The power supply in hdx for the pc is off the shelf, so is the rear fan. Easily replaced. But probably not worth it TBH.
I agree at the full retail price for the power supply board, however in my case I found a new replacement board on eBay for less than thirty pounds. The seller didn’t know what they had
That said the HDX is a very useful piece of kit, its a server, it’s a CD player, it’s a CD ripper, it’s an internet radio and it sounds good.
I have no intention of parting with mine, having said that I have the ability to “service” the electronics myself.
Software is a different issue though, as I’m still failing getting web connection even following the above advice.
Have you got the final firmware installed, I think you have to ask naim direct for the DVD?
Naim, or maybe a dealer, may still be able to provide the update on CD, although I don’t think this will help a failed internet connection. Version 1.7c is the latest.
Internet radio will no longer work as Naim have abandoned vTuner.
I might be wrong but I think an individual can purchase Vtuner themselves. If that would allow the HDX to connect I don’t have a clue.
I bought my first Naim equipment 50 years ago, changing it periodically over the years and there has always been full service support. That has now changed owners of HDX’s have been abandoned, I don’t know if that also applies to the old Olive equipment as well or only the case with more recent equipment.
Naim try to support as much as they can - it’s relatively easy with things like pre-amps, power amps and power supplies (and Naim have even undertaken R&D projects to specify new component choice when old components have ceased to be obtainable), but it gets a lot more difficult with more complex kit, especially where whole bought in boards or more complex components have been used (once you use up your lifetime-buy stock, that’s it), or where underlying elements such as OS are no longer supported.
As such Naim can still service pretty much all bolt-down, Chrome-bumper, and Olive kit, with only the CD Mechs of the latter, and parts such as the old NAT tuner displays posing a problem these days.
Updating an old amp is far simpler than maintaining a digital device with technology that becomes obsolete. Naim have, I think, been pretty good about issuing updates to older digital products where they can, but there are limits to what is doable.
The vTuner implementation Naim used on their products was discontinued due to problems with the provider which were out of Naim’s control, so I think you will need to consider an alternative iRadio source.
