Trying to update my Unitilite to version 4.9 which was released yesterday using a Windows 11 24H2 HP Probook. USB driver installed on Probook successfully. Silicon Labs USB to UART bridge installed successfully, showing COM4 in Device Manager. Streamer updater app showing COM4 in dropdown menu (no other options). Turn off Unitilite for 30 seconds, turn on and click Next in the app, this message pops up:
No other devices are showing in the Ports tab in Device manager.
I’m using the same USB cable which I used for previous updates but this is the first time I’ve used Windows 11. I guess Windows 11 may be the source of the problem.
Anyone experiencing the same problem? Can anyone suggest a solution?
Windows 11 take’s security ’paranoia’ to a whole new level……
I think, stress think, you have to grant access to any new devices and or software you install…… from somewhere in the settings.
I used two different cables which were packaged with Canon cameras I bought more than 15 years ago. They still work with the cameras but you may be right. I’ll buy a new one and try. I’ll let you know the result.
The other thing I recall from multiple beta versions over the years, although I haven’t got round to this update yet, is that you should connect the leads to the Naim unit and power it up before you start the updater program, by which I mean don’t even have the updater sitting there ready to go. That way the serial port should show up and be selectable when you start off the work flow of the update.
Connected, installed driver, com port showed up, unexpectedly com5 when the laptop only had a com1, don’t know what happened to 2, 3 and 4!
Then selected the com port in the updater program at which point you reboot the streamer, click next and it all goes through whist you have a cup of coffee.
Happy to report this morning that I updated my UnitiLite successfully with no hangups. Big thanks to TazUK and robert_h. I followed your advice and open the updater by right clicking the icon and selecting run as administrator. I had previously tried everything I thought might be preventing the COM port from opening: pausing my MalwareBytes and Norton Antivirus; removing non-essential preinstalled bloat software; changing the COM port assigned automatically by the Silicon Labs USB to UART bridge driver (the driver assigned COM4, I changed it in Device Manager to COM3 and reinstalled the updater so that it would also show COM3 in the drop down window); repairing my Windows 11 installation. None of these things had any effect. One thing that may have helped is that when I was in Windows Settings searching through recovery and repair options and installed updates I noticed this optional update from Silicon Labs:
I ran it before running the updater as administrator. I’ll never know if it was a factor or not.
Thank you to Naim for the update. I’m now enjoying my favourite radio stations again (after deleted my presets of course) and have found many new ones, including all the stations native to Georgia (Republic of, not GA USA) where I live. As an owner it’s frustrating when updates don’t work initially and having to spend time resolving the issue, but I also appreciate that it can’t be easy to provide an update for what must be a huge number of permutations of hardware and software installations across all users in a single download (or two considering the PC and Mac variants).
One final thought. Maybe if Naim, in the Update-Guide_Firmware_4.9_Windows, added the advice to use the run as administrator option, it would save some users some time and tears.
